Terje Rypdal's "Odyssey: In Studio & In Concert" is a very special release. It includes not only the complete Odyssey album - restoring the long track Rolling Stone to its rightful place, but also a full disc of previously unreleased material on which Terje Rypdal's Odyssey band is augmented by the Swedish Radio Jazz Group in a 1976 live performance of Rypdal's suite "Unfinished Highballs".

The electric guitar innovator in the 1970s. This box set in ECM’s Old & New Masters Series collects Terje Rypdal’s two-LP Odyssey album – heard on CD, for the first time, in its entirety, including the much-requested and epically-rocking “Rolling Stone” – and “Unfinished Highballs”, a recently unearthed 1976 radio recording that documents the Norwegian guitarist’s work for his Odyssey quartet and the Swedish Radio Jazz Group. The complete Odyssey may address a longstanding demand, but “Unfinished Highballs” will surprise even Rypdal’s most committed fans. It reveals that not only were many of the markers which would come to define his career already in place, but the intrepid guitarist was already searching for ways to include, rather than exclude, in his approach to composition and performance.

A new ECM studio album and a programme of new music from Terje Rypdal is cause for celebration. On Conspiracy the great Norwegian guitarist seems to reconnect with the wild inspiration that fuelled such early masterpieces as Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away, Odyssey and Waves, exploring the sonic potential of the electric guitar with both a rock improviser’s love of raw energy and a composer’s feeling for space and texture. Keyboardist Ståle Storløkken, who contributed to Terje’s Vossabrygg and Crime Scene albums is an ideal co-conspirator, perpetually thickening the plot with his own intuitive feeling for complementary sound-colours. Conspiracy also marks a welcome return for Pål Thowsen, whose subtle, detailed drumming was last heard on ECM with Arild Andersen’s 1970s groups. Rypdal’s best band in years is completed by gifted young bass guitarist Endre Hareide Hallre. Conspiracy was recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher and Terje Rypdal.

Terje Rypdal has long had an unusual style, mixing together elements more commonly found in new age and rock than in jazz; yet he is also an adventurous improviser. Associated with the ECM label since the early '70s, Rypdal's playing is definitely an acquired taste, using space and dense sounds in an unusual manner. Classically trained as a pianist, Rypdal was largely self-taught on guitar and originally most influenced by Jimi Hendrix. Rypdal played with Russell for a time and started an association with Jan Garbarek in the late '60s. He formed the group Odyssey in 1972, and has led various small groups since the mid-'70s. An important guitarist and composer in Norway, Terje Rypdal gained a cult following in the United States.

The sonic signature of Terje Rypdal is unmistakable - the yearning, skywards-slanting sustains which introduce his new album could not be anyone else.

Inspired by themes taken from the Judeo-Christian tradition with such titles as Creation, Chaos and Resurrection, the Chicago guitarist presents his interpretations in a suite of original sacred music. Along with his guests including Lawrence Hobgood, Paul Wertico and Paul McCandless, Moulder creates a work that is as adventurous and expansive as it is meditative and intimate.

Good news for all friends of prog/fusion music of Jukka Gustavson, the organist/keyboard player, vocalist and composer who, prior to his long and many-sided solo career, was for the most part responsible of WIGWAM's classic albums Fairyport (1971) and Being (1974). The sound of this new release may bring even those albums in mind here and there. By the way, in recent years he has been active playing live the music of Wigwam in various line-ups – although the material on those gigs have emphasized on the Pembroke-Rechardt "deep pop" era of Wigwam (his modesty has gone perhaps too far, thinks the more prog-oriented part of the audience). To some degree, Prognosis is a return to Gustavson's progressive style after a couple of more roots/blues-oriented collaborative albums. This is not to say that his familiar bluesy touch wouldn't be present here too.
