Croatian pianist Dejan Lazic kicks off the first of a provocative series of recordings with a delicious concert of Scarlatti and Bartók. In its gentle way, especially in performances of the beautiful clarity and poetry, it reminds me of a conversation I once had with Peter Bartók, the composer’s son, in which as a child he recalled falling asleep while his father played lullabies in an adjoining room.

At 1st sight, they appear to have nothing in common – but disregarding the stylistic elements & a difference of 2 centuries, you soon recognize that both are in a sense, musical architects, who as piano virtuosos were equally interested in miniature forms & inspired by folk music. On the 1 hand you have Scarlatti, who, after moving to Spain in 1729 composed almost exclusively for harpsichord & integrated elements of Spanish folklore into his compositions in an experimental way; on the other hand Bartk, who boosted the recognition of the rich native Hungarian peasant songs to an independent folk art, & was also influenced by Arabic folk music.

The high-caliber jury of the renowned Brussels Queen Elisabeth Competition applauded frenetically after Baiba Skride had finished her performance and won. A rarity, as fans of classical music know. And also that the 23-year-old Latvian performs real miracles on the violin. She has now recorded two CDs (Sony Classical): Solo she delights us with pieces by Bach, Bartók and Ysaÿe, accompanied by the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Chamber Orchestra she plays Mozart, Schubert and Michael Haydn.

Throughout her lengthy artistic career, pianist Martha Argerich has experienced many heights & depths: moments of "crisis" in which she hasn't always seemed prepared to offer the full extent of her artistic insights, but also many, many times when she has managed simultaneously to come into her own & to completely lose herself in music-making. Fortunately it's the latter snapshot of Argerich's career that this CD captures, drawing from 2 live recitals Argerich gave at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw in 1978 & 1979.

Dora Deliyska - Alles Walzer, Einmal Anders! (2020)

DSD Recording | Features Stereo and Multichannel Surround Sound | Channel Classics # CC 72841

This is an intriguing programme. The title refers to the Austrian call to dance Alles Walzer, a nod to the standard waltz repertoire, whilst the second part, einmal anders (once in a different way) reflects the more radical approaches to waltz rhythm employed by Ligeti and Bartók. One might add Ravel to this category too, though perhaps his choreographic poem La Valse, played here in the composer's own transcription, stands more on the border between these two camps. I have heard the work described as a requiem for a waltz rather than a celebration; ghosts of the rhythm flit back and forth, seldom lingering, and these shifting sands rhythm and harmony place it some distance from the waltzes of Schubert and Strauss.
