Sandy Nelson was a rarity in early rock music: a popular Los Angeles session drummer with a punchy Gene Krupa-inspired style, he also managed to become a star in his own right thanks to the instrumental solo hits "Teen Beat" (1959) and "Let There Be Drums" (1961)…

Percussionist SANDY NELSON was not merely the biggest, but just about the only major drum star of the 'Golden Era' of the Rock & Roll Instrumental. This set, which anthologises his 1962 releases, is complementary to an earlier Jasmine compilation, 'Teen Beat, 1959-61'. 1962 was a watershed year in Nelson's early career, in that he released an astonishing six LPs, four of which ('Drums Are My Beat', 'Drummin' Up A Storm', 'Golden Hits' and 'Compelling Percussion') made the US album charts. He also issued six singles that year, of which five ('Drums Are My Beat', 'The Birth Of The Beat', 'Drummin' Up A Storm', 'All Night Long' and 'And Then There Were Drums') made the US Top 100. Due to constraints in playing time, it is not possible to include his entire 1962 output, so a couple of LP cuts have been omitted. Nonetheless this is as comprehensive a collection of his 1962 recordings as is physically possible to compile onto a 2-CD set.

Drummin' Up a Storm continues Sandy Nelson's collaboration with producer and session ace Richie Podolor, co-writer of the drummer's smash "Let There Be Drums." While nothing here matched their previous commercial success, this is nevertheless a better-than-average entry in the vast Nelson catalog, achieving a fine balance between well-chosen covers and original material. While the former category establishes Nelson in contexts like New Orleans R&B (Fats Domino's "I'm in Love Again") and jazz (Duke Ellington's "C-Jam Blues"), everything here pales in the looming shadow of the Nelson original "All Around the World with Drums," a protean 12-minute epic that employs virtually every rhythm and studio effect known to man.

From Charlie Watts to Keith Moon to Meg White, virtually every drummer in rock history owes something to Sandy Nelson, so despite featuring a re-recorded version of the title cut (previously a Top Five hit for the Original Sound label), Nelson's debut LP, Plays Teen Beat, remains a landmark event in the history of popular music. One can only imagine the number of kids who started banging pots, kettles, and trashcans in emulation of its aggressively tribal rhythms.

Although sales of Sandy Nelson's second album suffered mightily from the absence of a major chart hit on par with his breakthrough "Teen Beat," He's a Drummer Boy! remains worth seeking out for the quality of its musicianship. Backed by a group of L.A. jazz session vets let by bassist Red Callendar, Nelson largely avoids the cover tunes associated with his later records in favor of a series of lively originals that make plain his debt to the big-band drumming of Gene Krupa and Cozy Cole. Make no mistake, however He's a Drummer Boy! is a rock & roll album, and Nelson drives forth the material with energy and abandon.
