In the late 1980s Carlos Santana's management sought to revitalise his career by reminding the world how good he was. They released Viva Santana!, a thirty track retrospective and supported it with a series of blistering live performances (including the one captured here), the strategy worked. The band Carlos took on the road was pared back. No horns and just one percussionist, the be-bop and latin-jazz legend, Armando Peraza. The band also features Jorge Santana on guitar; his solo feature on The Healer is very different in feel and tone from his illustrious older brother, Carlos, who is in fine form throughout. The doldrums of the mid-eighties behind him, he solos at length and rides the percussive swell of his well-oiled latin rock ensemble like a big-wave surfer.

Earthquake Relief was a series of concerts organised and sponsored by Bill Graham to raise money to help victims impacted by the 1989 quake and billed more than 45 acts, including vocalist Bobby McFerrin, Taj Mahal, guitarists Carlos Santana and Neil Young, and rock groups Los Lobos, Bonnie Raitt and Crosby, Stills & Nash. The iconic late 60s trio remained devoted to good causes and legendary Fillmore promoter Bill Graham. Together, they toured America, Asia and Europe to rave reviews bringing new life to a wide catalogue of songs from the CS&N and CSNY catalog that sound distinctly fresh, relevant, vital and full of life. At the Cow Palace in Daly City, CA, the revered folk-rock trinity delivered a set with the same conviction and singular vision that brought them together 20 years prior to this event. Timeline pays homage to this hugely influential and iconic trio with a fully restored and professionally remastered KQED-TV broadcast.
