It began almost as a lark when Carlos Santana encountered his longtime friend and hero Wayne Shorter on the concert trail in Atlanta, GA, in 1987. Carlos said, "Let's start a rumor that we're putting a band together." Wayne's eyes got bigger and brighter as he smiled and then responded: "Yeah, Carlos, let's start a rumor." A few months later the Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter Band performed its debut concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco, the beginning of a 26-concert tour throughout the U.S. and Europe. The performance of this magnificent band was recorded at Montreux, Switzerland, on July 14, 1988, and includes interviews with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and festival creator Claude Nobs.

This DVD highlights the career of this guitar master's unprecedented musical journey. With guests including Rob Thomas, Michelle Branch, and Product G&B, this once-in-a-lifetime TV event is finally available on DVD. The show incudes performances of his #1 smashes and career-defining cuts.

Santana were founded in the late sixties and came into the spotlight following their appearance at the Woodstock festival in 1969. Their eponymous debut album was released the same year and became a global success, introducing the public to the band’s unique blend of latin rhythms and guitar based rock. With legendary guitarist and band leader Carlos Santana at the helm, hit albums and singles followed through the seventies, eighties, nineties and up to the present day. Both Carlos and the band have been frequent visitors to Montreux over the years and in 2011 they presented a stunning concert of their greatest hits, classic album tracks and brilliant cover versions from their debut album right up to 2010s Guitar Heaven. The is the ultimate Santana live concert and absolutely not to be missed.

The other night I rented the movie Zodiac and watched it for the first time. Having missed it during its theatrical run, I had looked forward to watching it for some time. So anyway, one of the first things I picked up on about the movie was its very inventive use of the music from the same time period the gruesome serial murders occured in Northern California — stuff like Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" for example.

On a magical night in Montreux in 2004, Carlos Santana invited three of his favorite bluesmen: Buddy Guy, Clarence Gatemouth Brown and Bobby Parker for a concert of outstanding blues music. Each artist performed a full length concert and was joined on stage by Carlos Santana and other guests including Nile Rodgers and Barbara Morrison. July 12, 2004 was a very special night at the Montreux Festival for any blues fan. With Carlos Santana as musical director (and special guest guitarist), three musical legends took to the stage. Each one delivered a full concert set packed with some of the finest blues guitar playing you'll ever hear. Bobby Parker, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and Buddy Guy are all headline acts in their own right, so it was a real coup to get them on one lineup. Throw in the guest appearances by Carlos Santana and Chic maestro Nile Rodgers, and blues heaven is complete!
