The Fugees translated an intriguing blend of jazz-rap, R&B, and reggae into huge success during the mid-'90s, when the trio's sophomore album The Score hit number one on the pop charts and sold over five million copies. The trio formed in the late '80s in the New Jersey area, where Lauryn Hill and Prakazrel Michel ("Pras") attended a local high school and began working together. Michel's cousin Wyclef Jean ("Clef") joined the group (then called the Tranzlator Crew), and the trio signed to Ruffhouse/Columbia in 1993. After renaming themselves the Fugees (a term of derision, short for refugees, which was usually used to describe Haitian immigrants). Though the group's debut album, Blunted on Reality, was quite solid, it reflected a prevailing gangsta stance that may have been forced by the record label. Presents the Carnival No matter how pigeonholed the Fugees may have sounded on their debut, the group had obviously asserted their control by the time of their second album, The Score. With just as much intelligence as their jazz-rap forebears, the trio also worked with surprisingly straight-ahead R&B on the soulful "Killing Me Softly With His Song," sung by Lauryn Hill. Elsewhere, Clef and Pras sampled doo wop and covered Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry," giving the record familiarity for the commercial mainstream, but keeping it real with insightful commentary on their urban surroundings. The Score became one of the surprise hits of 1996, reaching number one on the pop charts and making the Fugees one of the most visible rap groups around the world.

Though John Barry achieved popular recognition for the swinging, loungey, noir-ish soundtracks he composed for the James Bond films, he moved to the front rank of film composers with his score for 1966's BORN FREE. Stylistically, the music of BORN FREE is miles removed from Barry's Bond soundtracks, though the composer's fondness for brass fanfares, stirring strings, and lush, intricate charts with stunning dynamic range is still intact. On the whole, however, the music to BORN FREE has a playful, innocent quality, evoking the nature of the wild animals at the film's center. As the movie is set in Africa, Barry employs a range of African percussion instruments, and sections of flute music (which often seem to echo the sounds of birds or other creatures). The arrangements are expansive and sweeping, giving rise to the sensation of open plains, and Barry's recurring musical themes parallel the film's action (the track titles indicate plot events). The score is, for the most part, surprisingly subdued, with occasional bursts of energy (mirroring tumultuous events onscreen) and its stirring title theme the exceptions. Barry won an Academy Award for the score in 1966.

Exciting, colorful and gigantic score for the fantasy film with special effects by Ray Harryhausen. Lengthy, spectacular re-recording features all of the music for Herrmann's various outlandish orchestral requirements, such as the huge brass section (including four tubas!) for the giant bronze statue Talos and multiple harps plus expanded woodwinds for the flying Harpies. Prepared from Herrmann's own original manuscripts and magnificently recorded in stunning detail. Bruce Broughton conducts the Sinfonia Of London.

La-La Land Records, Columbia Pictures and Asylum Records proudly present a remastered 2-CD limited edition re-issue of renowned composer Elmer Bernstein’s (GHOSTBUSTERS, TRUE GRIT, STRIPES) original motion picture score to the 1981 big screen, cult classic animated fantasy/action epic HEAVY METAL, produced by Ivan Reitman and directed by Gerald Potterton. A highly ambitious feature film animated adaptation of the legendary comic magazine HEAVY METAL required a musical underscore worthy of launching the entire enterprise into the stratosphere and the late, great Elmer Bernstein proved more than up to the challenge, delivering a rousing orchestral score that expertly drives the movie’s varied scenarios, moods and characters to wonderous heights. In total, the score remains a signature effort from one of the most uniquely American composers ever to come out of Hollywood. Produced by Neil S. Bulk and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this deluxe remastered release features the Score Presentation on Disc One, sourced from the composer’s own ¼” stereo tapes, while Disc Two unleashes the Original 1981 Score Album, which offers a different mix, and is also making its world premiere CD debut here, sourced from the original album masters.

Intrada presents the premiere score-only release of Hans Zimmer's A League of their Own. The delightfully witty film deserved a similarly tongue-in-cheek score. Zimmer's music artistically represents not only the film's period, but the onscreen antics as the first-ever women's baseball team is formed, while retaining a sense of gravity and reverence for this historic and unfortunately short-lived episode in American baseball. The film gave Zimmer the opportunity to create a score that blends nostalgic Americana with his inimitable style, resulting in a mix of swing/jazz numbers that complement his rousing orchestral music. Although the film is party comedy, Zimmer narrows in on the heart of the story—the camaraderie of the players and the emotional depth of the story— while also capturing the WW II era. Zimmer's main challenge in scoring the film was understanding the game itself, which was relatively foreign to him. But through trial and error he figured it out, even while on the recording stage:

Christine, based on Stephen King's novel about an unusual kind of car repossession, was taken by John Carpenter from book to screen in a blazingly short time. Rather than bypassing his usual methods, as he did with The Thing, Carpenter once again chose to do the score. The original soundtrack released from the movie was a brief affair indeed, offering up a small selection of rock & roll tunes used in the movie, plus a short selection ("Christine Attacks," here with the subtitle "Plymouth Fury") from Carpenter's score. As it is, this Tangerine Dream-influenced, mechanically pounding number is probably the best thing in the score, highly visual, threatening, and relentless. As with the best of Carpenter's work, it's enough to haunt your dreams for a few days – a property shared by the scores for Halloween and The Fog (both on Varese Sarabande).

This release includes the world première recording of the full orchestral score written by Armas Järnefelt (18691958) for Mauritz Stillers silent film Song of the Crimson Flower (1919) performed by Gävle Symphony Orchestra under Jaakko Kuusisto. Armas Järnefelt today largely known in music literature only as Sibelius brother-in-law became one of the most remarkable Finnish orchestral composers during the 1890s. The composer wrote several symphonic poems and orchestral suites in his young age which were highly successful and widely performed by various orchestras in his home country.
