This episode focuses on how the people of the new Russia are once again embracing their past following the fall of the Soviet Union. We follow the lives of nomadic reindeer herders in Siberia, a family of carpet-makers in the Caucasus Mountains, a fashion magazine executive in Moscow, a volcanologist in the Kamchatka Peninsula and a 17-year old aspiring circus performer in Kazan. Interspersed with these stories is footage of breathtaking scenery from around Russia, including Lake Baikal and St. Petersburg during summer twilight.

The Solaris mission has established a base on a planet that appears to host some kind of intelligence, but the details are hazy and very secret. After the mysterious demise of one of the three scientists on the base, the main character is sent out to replace him. He finds the station run-down and the two remaining scientists cold and secretive. When he also encounters his wife who has been dead for ten years, he begins to appreciate the baffling nature of the alien intelligence.

"Russian Empire" required weeks of shooting in the Russian capitals and dozens of trips around the current and former territories of the country, to unique places which had never been filmed in the past. From a Polish village which Peter the Great once passed by, to the roofs of the Hermitage and tiny German towns from where the Russian empresses had come from. The program includes filming at the sites of battles fought by the Russian armies, from Rome to Beirut, and the sites of the national disasters from Sebastopol to Eastern Prussia. The program includes historic anecdotes, real diaries, little-known documentational evidence and letters of the top personalities of the Empire. The "Russian Empire" is a personal history of this country, a TV investigation of the Russian imperial ideal which is still alive for both its supporters and adversaries.
