While virtually unknown in the U.S., pop singer Jennifer Rush achieved superstar status as an expatriate in Europe, selling millions of records and releasing a string of hit singles notable for their booming, dance-rock arrangements and Rush's powerful voice. Born Heidi Stern in New York City, Rush's father was an opera singer and her mother was a pianist. At the age of nine, she moved to Germany with her family, returning in her teens to the States. In 1982, she returned to Germany with her father to pursue a singing career, signing a deal with CBS/Columbia. Changing her name to Jennifer Rush, she released a series of songs that made her a star in Europe, including "Into My Dreams," "Come Give Me Your Hand," "25 Lovers," and "Ring of Ice."

It's hard to pull off a tribute album to a recently deceased celebrity with grace and style, but Diana, Princess of Wales: Tribute works extraordinary well. None of the songs on the two discs are explicitly about Diana, but the generally wistful, melancholy tone captures the feeling of mass mourning and regret. And, on the most basic level, it offers a collection of strong mainstream '90s pop songs. Only three of the songs – Neil Finn's new solo acoustic take of "Don't Dream It's Over," Peter Gabriel's "In the Sun," and Rod Stewart's fine cover of Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" – are new recordings, and most of the collection features familiar items: Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever," Annie Lennox's "Angel," Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," Seal's "Prayer for the Dying," Des'ree's "You Gotta Be," Michael Jackson's "You Are Not Alone"…

Passion is the fourth album by American singer Jennifer Rush. Following on from the success of her previous album, Rush continued working with much of the same team of writers and producers. This album however failed to find the same high level of success and didn't chart at all in the UK. However sales were satisfying in her most successful market, Germany, where the album reached No.3 and was certified platinum. The lead single "You're My One and Only" became a hit, but further releases "Keep All the Fires Burning Bright" and "Love Get Ready" did little to generate interest. Single success did come a few months later in the UK, when a duet with Placido Domingo, "Till I Loved You" became a hit in the summer of 1989.

Vocalist/guitarist Joe Lynn Turner began his musical career as the frontman of Fandango in the late '70s. Turner sang and played guitar on the band's four albums, from a 1977 self-titled debut to Cadillac in 1980; this work brought him to the attention of Rainbow's Ritchie Blackmore, who picked Turner to replace former vocalist Graham Bonnet. Turner's stay in Rainbow lasted from his 1981 debut on Difficult to Cure until the group's breakup in 1984; during that time, Rainbow released five albums and earned hits like "Stone Cold" and "I Surrender." Second Hand Life is the tenth solo studio album by Joe Lynn Turner. The album features songs written by artists like Jim Peterik and Martin Briley.

The first two albums by UFO featured an odd mix of crisp, focussed songs alternating with meandering electric guitar-led soundscapes. Flying starts off with perhaps their best of the former category, "Silver Bird." This story of a primitive islander seeing an airplane for the first time begins with a pleasant little acoustic guitar melody and builds into a soaring full-band musical expression of the wonder of flight. The next cut, all 19 minutes of it, conjures up the vaster expanses of space. To complain that "Star Storm" rambles is to miss the point; sometimes Michael Bolton's guitar is used as a pure sound effect rather than to convey any kind of rhythm or melody, and if you're patient, then listening can be an enjoyable, even absorbing, experience.

Nothing's Changed is the second solo studio album by Joe Lynn Turner. Joe Lynn Turner is an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer. He is known for his work in the hard rock bands Rainbow and Deep Purple. During his career, Turner fronted and played guitar with pop rock band Fandango in the late 1970s; and in the early 1980s, he became a member of Rainbow, fronting the band and writing songs with guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore and bassist, and producer, Roger Glover. After Rainbow had disbanded (the first time) in March 1984, he pursued a solo career, released one album, Rescue You, and then later did session work, singing background vocals for the likes of Billy Joel, Cher, and Michael Bolton. On the advice of Bolton, Turner began recording jingles for radio and television.

Slippery When Wet wasn't just a breakthrough album for Bon Jovi; it was a breakthrough for hair metal in general, marking the point where the genre officially entered the mainstream. Released in 1986, it presented a streamlined combination of pop, hard rock, and metal that appealed to everyone – especially girls, whom traditional heavy metal often ignored. Slippery When Wet was more indebted to pop than metal, though, and the band made no attempt to hide its commercial ambition, even hiring an outside songwriter to co-write two of the album's biggest singles. The trick paid off as Slippery When Wet became the best-selling album of 1987, beating out contenders like Appetite for Destruction, The Joshua Tree, and Michael Jackson's Bad.

Hot in the Shade is the 15th studio album by Kiss, released in 1989. It is the first Kiss full studio album since 1981's Music from "The Elder" to feature lead vocals from someone other than Paul Stanley or Gene Simmons, with drummer Eric Carr singing lead on "Little Caesar". It is also the final Kiss album to feature Carr in its entirety before his death in November 1991. The album is one of the band's longest, with a running time of nearly an hour (58:39). Of the 15 tracks on the album, only five were performed live. "Forever", co-written by Michael Bolton, was a pop hit and became a semi-regular part of the live setlist. Hot in the Shade was certified Gold on December 20, 1989. Its most successful single, "Forever" reached #8 on the Billboard charts, the band's highest charting single in the US since "Beth", 13 years earlier.
