Relics is a 1971 compilation album by Pink Floyd. The album was released in the UK on 14 May 1971 and in the United States on the following day. Initially released by Starline, the compilation was reissued by Music for Pleasure in the United Kingdom; Harvest and Capitol distributed the album in the United States. A remastered CD was released in 1996 with a different album cover, picturing a three-dimensional model based on the sketch drawn by drummer Nick Mason for the initial release. Relics has been rereleased on numerous occasions, and at times without the proper authority. One such incident involved EMI Australia releasing the album without the band's consent. This led to the LP being withdrawn and the album as a result became a rarity.

Unlike almost any of their peers, Pink Floyd played to both sides of the aisle: they were rooted in the blues but their heart belonged to the future, a dichotomy that made them a quintessentially modern 20th century band. That blues influence, quickly sublimated and only surfacing on the occasional Gilmour guitar solo, was the foundation for the band's very name, as the group decided to splice the names of two old bluesmen – Pink Anderson and Floyd Council – as a tribute to the American music they loved so. These members of the early Floyd – guitarist/singer Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters, keyboardist Rick Wright, and drummer Nick Mason – were all architecture students at London Polytechnic, with the exception of Barrett, who was an art student and a friend of Waters since childhood. This version of the band started gigging regularly in 1965, with Barrett becoming the group's lead singer quite quickly. During this time, the group relied on blues and R&B covers, not unlike many of their British peers, but they wound up extending the time of their sets through extended instrumental jams, planting the seeds of space rock that would come to fruition not much later. During 1966, the group's increasingly adventurous sets became something of a sensation in the London underground, leading to a contract with EMI early in 1967.

Pin Ups fits into David Bowie's output roughly where Moondog Matinee did into the Band's output, which is to say that it didn't seem to fit in at all. Just as a lot of fans of Levon Helm et al. couldn't figure where a bunch of rock & roll and R&B covers fit alongside their output of original songs, so Bowie's fans – after enjoying a string of fiercely original LPs going back to 1970's The Man Who Sold the World – weren't able to make too much out of Pin Ups' new recordings of a brace of '60s British hits. Pin Ups was more than an anomaly – it marked the swan song for the Spiders from Mars and something of an interlude between the first and second phases of his international career.

This 40th Anniversary box set offers three-discs of Syd Barrett and Co.'s dementedly catchy and haunting psychedelia. The first two discs feature the British release sequence in mono and stereo sound–both remastered–while the third disc contains several outtakes and rare singles. The real gems of the haul, the outtakes include alternate versions of album classics such as "Matilda Mother" and "Interstellar Overdrive" and the band's first three singles with B-sides: "Arnold Layne," "Candy and a Currant Bun," "See Emily Play," "Apples and Oranges," and "Paintbox." While many of the latter were released on RELICS, these digital remasters outshine previous renderings.
