After their collaboration on Anna, Swiss film director Pierre Koralnik and Serge Gainsbourg (along with Jean Claude Vannier) worked in 1970 on a legendary dark movie shot in New York. 'Cannabis' is a film mainly about blood, sex and death. The soundtrack had never been reissued entirely since 1970. There aren’t many artists whose personal life overshadows their musical output but Serge Gainsbourg wasn’t like most artists. His early career was spent smoking Gitanes, lurching between love affairs with various screen sirens and drinking his way through the nightclubs of Paris. Later he would become a dishevelled regular on French television, setting fire to a 500 franc note and drunkenly declaring his wish to bed Whitney Houston, before dying of a heart attack at 62. It’s little wonder that, apart from a bar of heavy breathing in ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus’, history can’t handle Gainsbourg’s musical accomplishments and some of the singer’s best work remains largely forgotten.

Du chant à la une!… is the first album by French musician Serge Gainsbourg, released 1958. This was the debut album for Gainsbourg, released on a 10" vinyl. Despite his current vogue, Serge Gainsbourg may be a bit of an acquired taste for Americans, particularly if they don't have enough French to get his brilliant, sardonic lyrics. Personally, I think his early songs are generally his best stuff, and I would recommend starting here, on this remastered first album issued on the Mercury Records Vinyl Replica. N° 2 is the second album by French musician Serge Gainsbourg, released in 1959. It features Gainsbourg backed by the Alain Goraguer Orchestra.
