Service Oriented Architecture

This course demonstrates an approach to a service-oriented architecture. We will use Ruby to create a authentication system that’s based on the Central Authentication Service (CAS) protocol: a single-sign-on / sign-off protocol for the web. Through the use of object oriented design, you will be able to create a Sinatra application that implements the aforementioned protocol specification, along with a demonstration client application that will consume those services.

Service-Oriented Architecture is becoming the leading architecture for IT, and it is changing the way organisations work. IT is slowly but steadily gaining maturity, and becoming the flexible yet stable and reliable support for business it should be. At the same time, IT is regaining its potential to create real business innovation. SOA will be an enormous step in the right direction for any organisation, but only if it is not approached as solely a technology issue. Technology is very interesting, and poses many challenges, but the real value will only be found when addressing the many coherent aspects that define the workings of business and IT in modern organisations.

For the last five years, I've been writing about Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). This culminated in the 2014 publication of Next Generation SOA: A Concise Introduction to Service Technology & Service Orientation, co-authored with Thomas Erl and other architects.
