Shape of Jazz to Come

In the rich tapestry of jazz and improvised music there has been a clear delineation between improvising over precomposed music, whether it was standard repertoire or original compositions and what is categorized as free improvisation, which is basically creating music 100% extemporaneously without any previously prepared material.

Concocting a head-rush tempest of swirling psychedelia, heavy rock crunch, prog virtuosity and free-jazz experimentation, Norwegian jazz-rock power quartet Red Kite releases its highly anticipated self-titled debut via RareNoiseRecords. The exploratory and electrifying supergroup features members of some of Norway’s best-known prog outfits, including Elephant9, Shining, Bushman’s Revenge and Grand General.

Twins is an album credited to jazz composer and saxophonist Ornette Coleman, released by Atlantic Records in 1971.

Live at the Hilcrest Club 1958 (also released as The Fabulous Paul Bley Quintet) is a live album by pianist Paul Bley, saxophonist Ornette Coleman, trumpeter Don Cherry, drummer Billy Higgins and bassist Charlie Haden recorded in California in 1958 and released on the Inner City label in 1976. The album is notable as being the first live recording of Ornette Coleman, made shortly after he recorded his first album, Something Else!!!! and featuring the group (without Bley) that would soon record the classic Atlantic albums The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) and Change of the Century (1960).

Barre Phillips’s Mountainscapes brings together strongly contrasting elements, the furious high-energy playing of the Surman/Phillips/Martin trio juxtaposed with spacious impressionistic pieces originally created for Carolyn Carlson’s ballet dancers.

The Shape of Water is a science fiction fairy tale written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, starring Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Doug Jones.
