NOW was recently proud to announce the ‘Yearbook’ for 1985, as we move forward to the second half of the 1980s, and we were delighted with the response to the 1979 edition back in September. However, we haven’t quite finished with those golden pop years 1980 – 1984.

Now That’s What I Call Music will continue their Yearbook ‘Vault’ series next month with 4CD and 3LP vinyl editions of Now Yearbook Vault ’84 which pulls together ‘lesser compiled’ tracks from what is SDE’s favourite year in pop. The 4CD sets (deluxe hardcover book with 28-page track-by-track guide and standard editions) feature 80 tracks, while the 3LP version pressed on blue vinyl 45 songs. The full tracklistings can be found below, but feature plenty of familiar acts with for some less familiar singles. Artists include Heaven 17, ABC, Soft Cell, Culture Club, Level 42, Blancmange, Hazell Dean, Divine, Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Malcolm McLaren, Sparks, The Associates, Go-Gos, Donna Summer, Bon Jovi and many more. All formats of Now Yearbook Vault ’84 will be released on 4 October 2024.

Here's a collection of the Ramones', early albums for the first time pressing in Japan onto compact discs. It contains all studio albums (excepting "Subterranean Jungle") from the "Ramones" (1976) to "Too Tough To Die (1984). All these CDs have a different mastering than been presented on the original American/European CDs and, as well, on the remastered CDs, – the sound is more rawer and less polished. Also, into collection has added "It's Alive" - the album recorded live at the Rainbow Theatre in London on 31/12/77 featuring 20 tracks instead of the 28 on the double LP.

However, we haven’t quite finished with those golden pop years 1980 – 1984.Compiling the ‘Yearbook’ series is a true labour of love, but given that between 1980 and 1984 there were more than 1500 new entries on the UK Top 40 – and on the ‘Yearbooks’ and their ‘Extras’ for the period we have presented 726 tracks – which means there are a number of brilliant songs that we didn’t get to feature… yet. .

Only Dance 1980-1984 follows the pattern of JCI's Only series, offering a seemingly random collection of 20 hits from a given genre or style for a period of five years. These songs weren't necessarily the biggest hits of these five years, although there are a number of classics and smashes here. It may be hard to deduce exactly why these songs were chosen – especially since the compilers apparently define "dance" as anything you could conceivably dance to – but the end results are nevertheless quite entertaining. All of the songs are featured in their original hit versions, not remakes, which isn't always the case with midline collections. Furthermore, there a few cuts that aren't easy to find on other collections or even greatest-hits albums, which means it's interesting to collectors as well as casual fans. Most importantly, each volume captures the feeling of the era, even if it's missing several big hits, and that's what makes the series a nice introductory overview for curious listeners.
