Shonen Knife (少年ナイフ) is an influential all-female Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka, Japan, in 1981. Heavily influenced by early Rock & Roll bands, 1960s girl groups, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock acts, such as The Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs expressing infectious melodies and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.

Shonen Knife's first record without founding drummer (and later bassist) Atsuko Yamano is a bit more diverse than the previous few albums. With guitarist Naoko Yamano in full control, there is plenty of the patented Shonen Knife Rock and Roll, but also some more laid back numbers – "Birthday" and "Oyasumi" are both ballads, and "Las Vegas" has a slight country rock feel to it.

Yama no Att-chan. (山のアッちゃん。, "Att-chan of the Mountain(s)") is the second album released by Shonen Knife and is almost exclusively in Japanese. The album was named after Atsuko, their drummer, the honorific "-chan" being added. Thus the title a bit of a pun, since the drummer's name is, when rendered Japanese style, Yamano Atsuko.

Rock Animals, is mellower than its predecessor, with less Ramones drive and more Beach Boys lilt. In fact, the title could be a nod to Pet Sounds, but no one knows for sure; the Virgin press release paints it as an ecological concept album, but the lyrics to songs such as "Little Tree", "Concrete Animals", and "Cobra Vs. Mongoose" are as inscrutable as ever, revealing no obvious Don Henley crusade. The catchiest and most gonzo tunes are the irresistable "Catnip Dream", which speculates about kitties getting high on catnip, and the '50s-style "Johnny Johnny Johnny", which features the memorable lyric, "Hee Hee Ha Ha Ho Ho/He's the coolest boy"… Who could argue with that?
