Shoshana

Vocalist Shoshana Bush grew up in Los Angeles singing American standards and loving Ella and Louis. After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in jazz studies, working with George Lewis, Christine Correa and Barry Harris, she moved back to LA and spent two years gigging and expanding her repertoire. These years were highlighted by two sold out shows at Catalina Jazz Club, one in November 2010 and another in August 2011.

Although “Dancing on the Wind” is only pianist Shoshana Michel’s second album, and her first as a composer of original material, she is already being recognized for her talents and is making a name for herself in the solo piano category. Shoshana’s musical background has had a number of twists and turns through various genres, in addition to starts and stops through the years. However, sometimes, fallow periods can be a time for germinating and realizations. A good example of this is the album’s opening track, about which Shoshana shared: “’When Leaves Dance’ is the first piano solo that I composed after not composing for about twenty-four years. I was drawn to and inspired by the movement of the leaves on the tree that is just outside the window by my piano as I was composing this piece.” This song makes a wonderful entry into the album and I loved the rippling arpeggios that capture the feeling of leaves moving in the breeze. I also really liked the minor key chord progression that added a subtly dramatic feel – a mellow drama, so to speak.

Reflection is Shoshana Michel’s fourth solo piano album and her third album of original compositions. The eleven pieces are a musical autobiography of sorts, inspired by Shoshana’s journey to finding herself as a composer and the life experiences that happened along the way. Recorded at Piano Haven Studio on Joe Bongiorno’s Shigeru Kawai SK7L grand piano, the piano sound is perfect for this music as well as Shoshana’s elegant playing touch - warm, velvety and very expressive.

Hell's Kitchen is a jukebox musical, with a book by Kristoffer Diaz and music and lyrics by Alicia Keys. The show is semi-autobiographical, telling the story of Keys's upbringing in Manhattan in the 1990s. The musical ran from October 24, 2023, to January 14, 2024 as part of The Public Theater's 2023–24 season. The show had its debut on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre on April 20, 2024. A corresponding album containing all songs was released on June 7, 2024

"Soul Whispers" is the debut recording by pianist Shoshana Michel. She has arranged and performed a beautiful collection of twelve soothing Jewish melodies (public domain) for solo piano. Backed by a 18 piece all-star big band with lush arrangements by Grammy award-nominated arranger Alan Ferber, Bean’s powerhouse vocals, for which she has become known, are visceral and heartfelt. She weaves effortlessly through varying styles from haunting originals to new workings of contemporary hits and beloved classics from a range of eras and genres. Everyone knows Shoshana’s voice is a force few can recon with. This album gives you more though – it shines light on the incredible storyteller that she is. You can feel every line she sings.
