Although Karol Rathaus (1895-1954) and Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) were contemporaries, they could hardly have led more different lives. Both biographies nevertheless exemplify the 20th century with its catastrophes, persecutions and destruction, and it is thus worthwhile to feature their music together in the same program.

Written in 1950-51, Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues are an obvious answer to those who know you, especially since the composer got there after being a jury in the first edition of the competition, You know in Leipzig. For this contest, the young Tatiana Nikolayeva won the prizes and the votes, and it was for her that Shostakovich conceived her own cycle. Unlike the Preludes and Fugues by Bach (here, cited here), which follow each other by following the "suite of the fifths" with alternating major and minor tones according to their relative harmonic relations. In other words, if the first pair is in C major, the second is in C minor, C minor, G major, C major. While in Le Clavier well tempered, the first is in C major, the second in C minor, the third in C sharp major, rising one semitone chromatic each time. Neither system has more validity than the other, of course; What matters is the architectural rigor, the foundation of the idea.

Böhm was reported to have told the Wiener Philharmoniker towards the end of his life "I loved you as one can only love a woman". Listening to this boxset, capturing the Concertgebouworkest at the peak of its powers (between 1935 and June 1941), still at a commendable level (between July 1941 and 1944) before having to rebuild from the ashes of war (1945 to 1947) to finally come back to the highest level (1949-1950), the careful auditor has history in the making unfolding with its drama, its joys, but essentially its incommensurable beauty.

The nine Beethoven Symphonies are considered to be one of the greatest musical testaments of all time and are a key staple in every conductor's repertoire. Simon Rattle performed the complete cycle with the Wiener Philharmoniker in live concerts, recorded for EMI between 29 April and 17 May 2002 at the historic Musikverein in Vienna.'These are not interpretations set in stone, deeply as Rattle has obviously thought them through; and his encouragement of the brilliant VPO woodwind and horn soloists to challenge each other in imagination and individuality adds to the impression of joyful discovery.'
