Skinny Puppy - Rabies (1989)  Music

Rabies is a solid, sordid album from Skinny Puppy, even if it isn't always the sound of the band operating at their peak. All of the trademark Skinny Puppy elements are in place: Nivek Ogre's snarling vocals, snippets of dialogue from sci-fi and horror movies, and symphonic, chugging synth sounds. At least four of the album's 11 tracks are perfect examples of Skinny Puppy's sonic attack.

In the scheme of all things Skinny Puppy, Cleanse, Fold and Manipulate can be rather hard to recommend. Though it contains one of the band's finest songs, "Deep Down Trauma Hounds," Cleanse ultimately feels like a turning point, where experimentation is just beginning to gel with innovation and the band's trademark sound is forming rapidly before one's ears. But much of the album comes across like a series of interludes or ambient instrumental fragments.

In nearly three decades, Skinny Puppy has established itself as a groundbreaking, innovative voice in the world of electronic music. The band is always fearless in both its musical experimentation and voicing a stance on the issues of our times, and the new album Weapon is no exception.

Even when the industrial revolution happened, few North American bands sounded as manic and dense as the mighty Skinny Puppy. Tackling unpopular political topics, blurring distorted vocals into synth lines, sampling news broadcasts and horror films – these were the tactics that Skinny Puppy utilized on VIVIsectVI, one of their true masterpieces.

It's not a compilation of across-the-board greatest songs, but the Skinny Puppy singles collection does the old 12" Anthology one better by including tracks from the group's three Nettwerk albums of the 1990s (Rabies, Too Dark Park, and Last Rights). For fans, it's long been a dream to have the full fruits of the industrial kingpins' long career all on one disc – "Dig It," one of Skinny Puppy's first and best singles, appears right beside "Worlock," from 1989's Rabies.

Last Rights, Skinny Puppy's final album before a five-year hiatus, and their second to last overall, is a hailstorm of electro-distortion ten years ahead of its time. Even while industrial pop stars like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry were strutting their way across the charts and media outlets trumpeting the industrial revolution, Dave Ogilvie and cEvin Key's ambitious production talents reached what is easily a technical peak (and, arguably, an artistic peak). "Inquisition" is the pinnacle, a heart-stopping single whose production contributed just as much to the air of menace as Ogre's vocals.

Skinny Puppy reunited for a one-off reunion concert in 2000, five years after the release of The Process, the death of keyboardist Dwayne Goettel, and the breakup of the band. The question of whether founding members Ogre and Cevin Key could pull off the Skinny Puppy live experience without Goettel is answered on Doomsday, a record of their concert at the Doomsday Festival in Dresden, Germany.

Nine Inch Nails and Ministry usually get all the credit for introducing industrial music to the masses during the early '90s. But another group that had been championing the style for just as long – actually, longer – was Skinny Puppy. While the two aforementioned bands had obvious hard rock leanings, Skinny Puppy always aligned themselves more with electro-dance, and they continue to do so on their 13th release overall, 2007's Mythmaker.
