"Deep in My Soul" is an unusual Smokey Robinson LP in that he only contributed one song, "Vitamin U," a forgettable attempt at disco, though an amusing play on words. Kathy Wakefield and Mike & Brenda Sutton's "There Will Come a Day" uses a similar piano opening to "You Really Got a Hold on Me"; while pleasant, it is far less riveting than the Miracles' classic. The standouts are the tingling "In My Corner" and two Donald Baldwin/Jeffrey Bowen tunes, "If You Want My Love" and "You Cannot Laugh Alone." For years, the latter cut alone made this an essential Smokey Robinson LP. You couldn't find it anywhere else, not even on a 45; Motown has since released it on Smokey's Motown Legends collection. The lyrically clever song has a great chorus with Smokey crooning "Your love was crackerjack/A surprise in every pack/A myth a fantasy/A package C.O.D." Deep in My Soul only had seven songs, and surprisingly climbed to #47 on the pop charts, a far better showing than his debut, which peaked at #70.

This is one of the most highly acclaimed soul albums of the 1970s. A longtime innovator at Motown, Robinson responded to the Funk revolution in black music (Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, Al Green) with an effective counterpoint: the stylish and mature album A Quiet Storm. This landmark album spawned and lent its name to the "Quiet Storm" musical programming format, a format still adopted by radio stations across America 40 years later.

Gathering the first two long-players credited to Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, this two-fer compiles the 1965 and 1967 releases Going to a Go-Go and Away We a Go-Go. Admittedly, these are early entries into the voluminous Smokey catalog; artistically, however, both albums reflect the infinite talents of Robinson and company. Additionally, they are a testament to the cohesive, timeless, and fully developed sounds emanating from the inhabitants of Hitsville USA and the originators of the self-proclaimed Sound of Young America. Both LPs included copious hits, including "My Girl Has Gone," "Ooo Baby Baby," "Going to a Go-Go," "(Come 'Round Here) I'm the One You Need," and "Tracks of My Tears."
