A CD release for the very rare Smokey Wilson album recorded for Big Town in the late 70s. Wilson was the natural successor to Howling Wolf, with a similarly astonishing voice, who produced some of the finest blues of the 70s. When many were succumbing to the over-processed sounds of the day, Smokey was still down and dirty like good blues ought to be. This is the first UK release for Smokey Wilson apart from two tracks that appeared on Lindi Waters' Cascade blues box. Many of the tracks were speeded up in the original mix and these have been restored to the correct tempo of their recording. The legendary George 'Harmonica' Smith features on several tracks. Includes five previously unreleased tracks.

Robinson also modernizes and updates his own song Get Ready, a huge hit for both the Temptations in the 1960s and Rare Earth in the '70s.

"Deep in My Soul" is an unusual Smokey Robinson LP in that he only contributed one song, "Vitamin U," a forgettable attempt at disco, though an amusing play on words. Kathy Wakefield and Mike & Brenda Sutton's "There Will Come a Day" uses a similar piano opening to "You Really Got a Hold on Me"; while pleasant, it is far less riveting than the Miracles' classic. The standouts are the tingling "In My Corner" and two Donald Baldwin/Jeffrey Bowen tunes, "If You Want My Love" and "You Cannot Laugh Alone." For years, the latter cut alone made this an essential Smokey Robinson LP. You couldn't find it anywhere else, not even on a 45; Motown has since released it on Smokey's Motown Legends collection. The lyrically clever song has a great chorus with Smokey crooning "Your love was crackerjack/A surprise in every pack/A myth a fantasy/A package C.O.D." Deep in My Soul only had seven songs, and surprisingly climbed to #47 on the pop charts, a far better showing than his debut, which peaked at #70.

Berry Gordy hated these two-fers: too much for too little money; but he doesn't own the masters anymore and Universal International has revitalized the concept via digitally remastered CDs. This combo features Time Out, which spawned the hits "Doggone Right," "Baby, Baby Don't Cry," "Abraham, Martin & John," the popular B-side "Here I Go Again," an uptempo take of "My Girl," and two fine Smokey Robinson songs: "Once I Got to Know You (Couldn't Help But Love You)" and "I'll Take You Anyway That You Come." Four in Blue, aka the Miracles' forgotten album, has some good moments that few know about because none of its tracks emerged as single; not even a B-side. "You Send Me (With Your Good Loving)" sounds like a hit; "When Nobody Cares," a cry for racial tolerance; "Don't Say You Love Me," a great Richard Morris production; and Holland, Dozier, Holland's "My World Is Empty." Not as arresting as Time Out, but solid.

Named after the famed New Orleans Mardi Gras parade float, Smokey Mary is singer/pianist Harry Connick, Jr.'s 2013 studio album. The release of the album coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Krewe of Orpheus, the Mardi Gras super krewe which Connick co-founded in 1993. Included on the album is the song, "Smokey Mary Boogie Woogie Choo Choo Train," which Connick-penned in homage to the krewe's signature float.
