There is a wonderfully vivid, pictorial quality to Tchaikovsky's colourful music. Soon after Tchaikovsky completed his ballet, The Nutcracker, Taneyev made a piano transcription of the entire work. When he finished his transcription, he gave it to Tchaikovsky. Taneyev may have thought about using this transcription for ballet practice and that he intended to try to capture all the sounds of the original piece when arranging it. But the overt frankness with which Taneyev reacted to Tchaikovsky's works made the composer nervous lot and they are often particularly dissatisfied with each other.

Simeon Ten Holt: Solo Piano Music Vol 1-5 - Jeroen Van Veen (2013) Music

Very recently passed away at age 89 Simeon ten Holt was the Icon of Dutch minimalism. His works for multiple pianos include his most famous work, ‘Canto Ostinato’, which gained cult status with a large audience not necessarily familiar with traditional classical music. The slowly shifting repeated patterns in Ten Holt’s music have a hypnotic and hallucinatory effect on listeners, during concerts which may take several hours. Dutch pianist Jeroen van Veen is “the leading exponent of minimalism in Holland” (Alan Swanson in Fanfare), a close acquaintance of Ten Holt, the ideal interpreter of his music.

Historian, he is with his rooms in the old style - gigue, sarabande, canon -; and at the same time, arranger with the gavotte from Gluck. Arranger, he is with his own Hungarian Dances rewritten for piano solo (the original being for piano four hands), and in Walk Rákóczy (also known as the Hungarian March) from Berlioz; and at the same time teacher since the studies we present Douglas are written respectively by Chopin, Bach and Weber - the latter especially in a pretty sneaky arrangement of the Chaconne, originally for solo violin by Brahms for the left hand alone .
