The dignified bearing and quiet wisdom of Nikolai Myaskovsky (1881–1950) gained him the sobriquet of ‘the conscience of Russian music’ – and those qualities are reflected in the unemphatic strength of his music. His orchestral, chamber and instrumental works are regaining the currency they once enjoyed, but his large corpus of songs, many of them understated masterpieces, has yet to attract systematic attention – a situation this series hopes to remedy. The pairing here of his late Violin Sonata with his last two song-cycles for soprano and piano mirrors the Moscow concert in 1947 when all three were given their first performances.

His tragic early death and publishing difficulties meant that his music was hidden for decades. Volume 1 of this complete edition contains his entire output until 1910, including several world première recordings and revealing his early melodic gift and sophisticated virtuosity.

This second and final volume of Olga Solovieva’s complete edition contains all of Alexey Stanchinsky’s published piano pieces composed after 1910, as well as recently discovered early works. Stanchinsky’s piano music is an unparalleled phenomenon, anticipating future musical developments and including the invention of new ‘canon-prelude’ and ‘sketch’ genres. From the dramatic Sonatas to the miniature universes captured in his Sketches, Stanchinsky’s vivid and heartfelt melodies are relatable to us all. ‘Stanchinsky’s music is like an exposed nerve, all at the limits of the senses. It reveals the innermost feelings, expressing what is in the soul.’ – Olga Solovieva
