The renowned Austrian Ensemble Castor presents the first part of the world premiere recording of Johannes Schenck's complete Op.7. This is the only workwritten by Schenck for violin and basso continuo.

Affective contrasts, seducing vocality, effortless virtuosity, and a penchant for intimacy; these are some of the lures of Italian music around 1600. Peter Van Heyghen and Kris Verhelst, two leading specialists in this field, have dedicated their latest recording to this music. Discover and enjoy their flowery selection of ornamented motets and madrigals, song variations, ricercars, toccatas, intonations, capriccios, canzonas and sonatas, performed on historically accurate instruments (three recorders, two harpsichords and an organ).

The collection of toccatas Apparatus musico-organisticus, published in 1690, immediately established Georg Muffat as one of the greatest organists of his century. A veritable reference in the organ repertoire, appreciated for its stylistic diversity, this work testifies to Muffat's ambition to blend European styles while exploring the expressive possibilities of the Baroque organ. Bernard Foccroulle deploys a range of emotions that underline the breadth and harmonic richness of the toccatas, performed on an organ emblematic of the French style that suits them so well, to which is added the delicate Sonata a violino solo, executed with brio by Marie Rouquie.

The music on this recording demonstrates how composers in Germany, Italy, Austria and England responded to the challenges of writing for violin senza basso. Music for violin senza basso had a distinguished history before Bach and was widely cultivated by his contemporaries. Violinistic virtuosity was extraordinarily experimental in the late seventeenth century, with novelties in the tuning of the strings (scordaura), bowing techniques, chordal playing and contrapuntal textures (with the development of sophisticated double-, triple- and quadruple-stopping techniques) and playing in high positions. This disc of solo violin music is a real mixture of some of Rachel’s favourite pieces. Rachel Podger is one of the most creative talents to emerge in the field of period performance. Over the last two decades she has established herself as a leading interpreter of the music of the Baroque and Classical periods.

This recording of works for violin and piano/orchestra by Krzysztof Penderecki marks and celebrates the long and fruitful cooperation and friendship between Anne-Sophie Mutter and Krzysztof Penderecki on the occasion of his 85th birthday on 23 November 2018.
