Sonny Rollins, one of jazz's great tenors, is heard here at his peak with a pair of piano-less trios (either Wilbur Ware or Donald Bailey on bass and Elvin Jones or Pete La Roca on drums) stretching out on particularly creative versions of "Old Devil Moon," "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," "Sonnymoon for Two," and "A Night in Tunisia," among others. Not only did Rollins have a very distinctive sound but his use of time, his sly wit, and his boppish but unpredictable style were completely his own by 1957. Truly magical.

"Night At The Village Vanguard" has been home to some of jazz’s finest performances. Rollins’ appearance at the legendary venue in 1957 proved he was one of post-bop’s most inventive and agile soloists. In peak form, Rollins enlisted two different bands for the historic shows. The afternoon show featured Donald Bailey on bass and Pete La Roca on drums, while the evening show featured bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Elvin Jones. The ensemble dazzles with tunes including “A Night in Tunisia”, “Woody 'N You” and “I Can't Get Started”.

This album captures Sonny Rollins in his first concerts as leader of his own jazz combo, recorded at shows at the Village Vanguard in New York City on November 3, 1957. Rollins played afternoon and evening sets with different trio members; 18 songs performed that day are included here. While the illustrious Village Vanguard club has been the recording site of some 100 live jazz releases over the years, Rollins's was the very first.
