Atlantic Unearthed is a two-volume CD series released by Rhino Records on eleased on 20 June, 2006 focusing on male and female artists respectively, thus the sub-titles Soul Brothers and Soul Sisters. The songs are a mixture of known and forgotten songs and artists, with a few previously unreleased at the time of its release. Both discs are combined in one folder for the download.

Funk was first and foremost about raising consciousness, and feminine empowerment was a crucial part of that equation – now women were creating music as raw, impassioned, and vital as their male counterparts, shattering the racial and sexual divides that had long placed restrictions on their self-expression. The first volume in the Harmless label's excellent I'm a Good Woman series captures distaff funk at its fiercest, digging deep for rare cuts and killer grooves that go far beyond the standard-issue soul diva collections. Just because the big names are few and far between doesn't mean this stuff isn't amazing, however – check out highlights including Laura Lee's monumental "Crumbs off the Table," the Stovall Sisters' "Hang On in There," or Betty Davis' "Anti Love Song" for proof.

Spreading itself thick across three decades of funk, soul, and smooth R&B, Metro's Funk Soul Sisters not only covers a fair amount of stylistic ground, but it also mixes chart hits with rare groove, and in turn serves up a compilation that plugs gaps in one's collection while remaining a great listen from front to back. Though the focus is obviously on the women who made these songs what they are, the graceful touch of Roy Ayers is felt on four highlights of the disc's 16 cuts.
