Excellent progressive rock from excellent japanese women!

Ars Nova: This female keyboard trio started in the next line-up: Keiko Kumagai (keyboards), Kyoko Kanazawa (bass) and Akiko Takahashi (drums). In '92 ARS NOVA released their promising debut-album "Fear & Anxiety", a tribute to ELP with floods of powerful Hammond organ and flashing synthesizer solos, supported by a strong and adventurous rhythm-section. After several album and changes in the line-up, ARS NOVA is still going strong and end 2003 the trio released their new CD entitled "Biogenesis Project": it's loaded with spectacular instrumental prog rock in the vein of ELP, UK and TRACE. The current ARS NOVA includes Keiko Kumagai (keyboards), Akiko Takahashi (drums, voice) and Mika (vocal and chorus)…

Music, more than all the arts, has the ability to move us to other settings, unforgettable times and moments and hardly describable through rational knowledge. Throughout the world, from blues to voodoo and to the sitar of Ravi Shankar, it has been possible to enter other states of consciousness through sound.

Review for The Shining (Original Sound Track)
The soundtrack for Director Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film, The Shining may be the horror genre's Holy Grail; a real collector's item. It's rare to find a legitimate copy of this film's music anywhere. The vinyl version of the soundtrack was withdrawn from the market due to licensing issues and it was never released on CD. Currently, the aforementioned record is being sold on Discogs and eBay for obscene amounts of money. It's not surprising given that the film has become so iconic. Kubrick had an uncanny knack of synchronizing just the right passages of music to coincide perfectly with the images on the screen. He relied more often than not on existing music rather than a traditional score with 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining being prime examples. I think it's safe to say that Kubrick may have even led the way in this regard for other filmmakers such as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, Marty Scorsese, and obviously Quentin Tarantino.

Initially lurching from the UK noise underground in 2003 like a bedraggled audial creature rendered from toxic waste in a VHS horror movie, the musical growth rate of Hey Colossus has been quite a spectacle to observe. Yet from the nightmarish murk of early driller-killer works such as 2004's debut 'Hates You' and 2008's 'Happy Birthday' to more recent nuggets of perversity like 2013's 'Cuckoo Live Life Like Cuckoo', this beast has mutated and evolved into something uncommonly alluring.

Goblin followed up the impressive Italian success of Profondo Rosso with one of the few non-soundtrack items in their catalog. Despite this fact, Roller finds the group's trademark mixture of prog rock complexity and horror movie atmospherics very much intact: The title track builds from staccato piano passages into an epic riff powered by electric guitar and cathedral-style organ, while "Goblin" is an epic of prog fireworks that works in an array of complex solos from each of the group's members.

Classical / Contemporary Classical / Minimalism

Daniel Lentz is a California-based composer who achieved some degree of notoriety in the '80s for his melding of minimalist formulas with softer, more romantic (some might say new age-y) notions, making special use of struck and rubbed wine glasses. At his best, as on the composition "Wild Turkeys," he achieves a giddy ecstasy, easily pulling the listener along for the ride. Other times, a portentousness sets in, a heavy-handed appropriation of fashionable ethnic themes that causes the work in question to suffer from either hubris or preciousness.

Recordings of Tchaikovsky symphonies are appearing less frequently since the great major label implosion of a few years ago, and the upside is that we can once again approach new releases with interest, and even anticipation. Conductor Tugan Sokhiev’s light, sinewy reading gives the impression of a fresh approach to this warhorse work. He elicits bold if not particularly brazen sounds from the Toulouse orchestra brass in the dramatic opening and throughout the first movement–especially the close, where I was once again reminded that this is pretty scary music. He achieves this effect not only by energetic tempos, but also by highlighting the harmonic tension Tchaikovsky built into the score, and by taking great care with the music’s unique timbral characteristics (woodwinds in particular).

Fully restored, complete Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack from Steve Miner satanic horror film with Julian Sands, Lori Singer, Richard E. Grant gets world premiere release on CD! When Goldsmith first prepared his 1989 album for Intrada, he omitted numerous cues, dropped several electronic ideas and deleted sweetener tracks. Resulting original stereo mixes were all that existed for some 25 years. Now, at long last, newly located 2" masters allow restoration of the entire score with all electronics and sweeteners intact plus many previously unreleased cues! Warlock holds a very important place in the composer's repertoire: Coming literally at the end of the eighties, Goldsmith bids farewell to his legendary busy action vernacular while simultaneously looking forward to his streamlined nineties work. Meld of two styles is terrific! Lean main theme in minor key trades with aggressive action spotlighting propulsive low brass figures, swirling woodwinds, slicing strings. Epic highlights: lengthy final showdown ("Salt Water Attack") with dynamic action writing, heartfelt parting sequence ("The Salt Flats") with rich variant of main theme, moving chordal passages. Vibrant new mixes made by Bruce Botnick & Mike Matessino, entire production supervised by Nick Redman, informative liner notes by Jeff Bond.
