The third installment in the Classics chronological overview of recordings issued under the name of pianist Jess Stacy traces a time line from March 16, 1951, to March 3, 1956, with recordings made exclusively in Los Angeles, CA. It opens with eight titles recorded for Brunswick by Stacy, guitarist George Van Eps, bassist Morty Corb, and drummer Nick Fatool. This quartet's marvelous integrity is strongly in evidence on Rodgers & Hart's "You Took Advantage of Me" and endures throughout each of the ensemble members' subsequent collaborations. Tracks nine through 18 were recorded for Atlantic during April 1954 by two different nine-piece Benny Goodman reunion bands under the leadership of Jess Stacy…

2012 release, an installment in the popular Mod Jazz series of compilations. This best-selling series offers Jazz that is accessible, touching on it's Blues, Soul and Latin influences while always having a danceable beat. It includes the super-rare, the well known and the previously unreleased. Here are a couple of impossible-to-find tracks in the form of Troy Dodd's' 'The Real Thing' and Jesse Davis 'Night Bloomin' Jasmin'. Both are B-sides of super-expensive Northern rarities, but are excellent Mod Jazz tracks in their own right. We've chosen five previously unreleased cuts, including a stunning organ version of 'Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf', a future R&B monster from Floyd White and a great boogaloo from Dave Hamilton. Kent Records.

Benjamin David Goodman (May 30, 1909 – June 13, 1986) was an American jazz clarinetist and bandleader known as the "King of Swing". In the mid-1930s, Goodman led one of the most popular musical groups in the United States. His concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 16, 1938 is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music." Goodman's bands started the careers of many jazz musicians. During an era of racial segregation, he led one of the first integrated jazz groups. He performed nearly to the end of his life while exploring an interest in classical music.

Would we know how jazz is played on the vibes without Lionel Hampton? He introduced the concept of personality to an instrument thought to be sterile and cold; showed how to solo with authority and accompany with grace; taught how to make the instrument express emotions as divergent as tender melancholy and unrestrained joy and did it all with the recordings now available from Mosaic.

Jazz / Swing / Tenor Saxophone

This is a comprehensive collection with countless pivotal sessions. It features 203 separate recordings on seven CDs and collects both the sessions led by Chu Berry and other sessions where he contributed significantly as a sideman. You can study his remarkable surefootedness as a soloist; remember an era where evolution in the music was running rampant and Chu Berry's tenor saxophone was one of the things making it run.
