New York-based guitarist Larry Corban took his time creating a follow-up to his debut— Moving 4-Ward (Self Produced, 2002); it would be more than a decade before album number two—The Circle Starts Here (Nabroc Records, 2013)—would appear, but that one got the ball rolling again. Corban formed a strong connection with his trio mates on that project—bassist Harvie S and drummer Steve Williams—so he wisely brought them back for this album, adding pianist James Weidman—their band mate in The Aperturistic Trio—to make it a foursome.

I inherited this when a friend died a while back. With very few exceptions, I'm not a fan of modern (read post big band) jazz, and this isn't one of those exceptions. I do, however, find it interesting that one of the songs included here is "My Girl," an early big hit by The Temptations and written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White (one of the Miracles). This is her second release, and I guess she's a pretty important artist since five of her 12 releases (not including comps) have also been issued by MFSL.

An excellent budget compilation of the wonderful Bethlehem Records label - what a roster of artists they had. Very good sound too. The Bethlehem label focused on jazz releases, and this set collects some great examples of jazz–vocally and instrumentally–between the years 1958-62. One look at the artists on this 60 track 2 CD set shows how many fine artists released music on the label. Like other collections from One Day Music, there's no booklet, only a short paragraph about the label and a few of the featured artists. The digitally remastered sound is good overall within the limits of recording styles of the era.
