Early in his solo career, Sting defined himself as a man of taste, choosing to work with jazz musicians instead of rockers. Inevitably, this meant he walked the thin line between sophisticated pop and adult contemporary, but he did it with grace from 1985's Dream of the Blue Turtles to 1993's Ten Summoner's Tales. Unfortunately, Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting doesn't illustrate what a deft trick he pulled off with that quartet of albums. Naturally, Fields of Gold concentrates on his hit singles, just like any other greatest-hits collection, but Sting's material sounds surprisingly tame in this context. Sure, there is a number of great songs here – enough to state his case as a fine songwriter or to satisfy his casual fans.

Live at Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles, USA - July 27th 1988. Excelent Soundboard recording. For the avid bootleg collectors, a new gem has popped up: STING – July 27, 1988 Los Angeles “Wiltern Theatre” – Soundboard recording. This show was part of the second US-leg of the 1987/ 1988 Nothing Like The Sun tour. Most of the shows were performed in large arenas or at special summer festivals. He did however play in the intimate Wiltern Theatre on July 27. Only about 2,300 people were able to attend this very special and long show. Sting and the band performed all the songs they did during the other dates of the tour, but many extra songs were added. The show also included several interesting covers (including songs by George Gershwin and Frank Zappa). This resulted in the longest Sting show ever. A whopping 172 minutes, or almost 3 hours. Some members of the band had the chance to perform some songs of their own: Dolette McDonald, Delmar Brown, Kenny Kirkland and Branford Marsalis provided some very high quality moments. During the tour Sting liked to perform songs in the language of the particular country. That night in California he sang all those songs in French, German, Italian and Spanish. Now, the funny part is that In 1988/ 1989 there were serious plans to release a live album of (parts of) this show. The artist Robert Gligorov already made artwork for the album. Somehow the whole project was withdrawn by the record company and the official album was never released.

The Police never really broke up, they just stopped working together – largely because they just couldn't stand playing together anymore and partially because Sting was itching to establish himself as a serious musician/songwriter on his own terms. Anxious to shed the mantle of pop star, he camped out at Eddy Grant's studio, picked up the guitar, and raided Wynton Marsalis' band for his new combo – thereby instantly consigning his solo debut, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, to the critical shorthand of Sting's jazz record…

Genre: Pop / Label: Stuffed Monkey

It is the third best-of by Mylène Farmer, after les mots (published in 2001) and 2001-2011 (published in 2011). As with these two records, Histoires de is dressed in a particularly sophisticated visual, due to Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who had already signed the cover of disobedience in 2018. The assured posture of Mylène Farmer gives way here to a mysterious figure, a dark silhouette where only her look and her Albator haircut appear in the open. This compilation is divided into three separate parts, which respect a certain chronology. Thus, the first CD consists of live pieces from various and varied concerts, but which correspond more or less to the first part of Mylène's career (Libertine, without counterfeiting, disenchanted…). The other two CDs are a collection of his latest albums. It is funny to note that the more we advance in the tracklist, the less his partner Laurent Boutonnat is present. In this respect, one of the strengths of this best - of is to depict the evolution of a mythical duo that, over time, has been able to stay close, while freeing themselves from each other exponentially.
