The Salzburg Wind Philharmonic with its principal conductor Hansjörg Angerer conquers highest musical peaks following the motto “From the mountains” and makes the romanticism of the countryside, hunting cries as well as Alpine storms become a unique sound experience.

“For me, Strauss is one of the greatest composers,” Diana Damrau has said. “The way he handles the soprano voice is a joy. And to be able to sing his music with my voice feels like coming home.” The centrepiece of this album of Strauss songs is the sublime Vier letzte Lieder, in which Damrau – born and trained in Bavaria – joins forces with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and its long-standing Chief Conductor Mariss Jansons, in what was to become his final recording. Her partner in a tempting and diverse selection of songs with piano is Helmut Deutsch. “Not only is Strauss’s music gorgeous,” says Damrau, “there’s the way he combines words and notes – and the psychology.”

This is one of Deutsche Grammophon’s key releases for the Strauss year, which marks the composer’s 150th birthday. In 2014, American baritone Thomas Hampson celebrates Richard Strauss’ 150th anniversary with several concerts in Europe and North America and a new production of the composer’s Arabella at the Salzburg Easter Festival.

Twenty-two years ago Stockfisch Records released Powderhouse Road, the debut album of the New York-singer/songwriter Steve Strauss. It was groundbreaking with regard to its recording quality and was very well received. A Very Thin Wire, the fourth and newest album of the now 55-year-old American artist is being released on SACD by the Stockfisch label boss and producer Günter Pauler.

With its Chief Conductor Toshiyuki Kamioka at the helm, the Copenhagen Philharmonic performs three of Richard Strauss’s most sparkling scores: the Oboe Concerto, with soloist Andreas Fosdal, the First Horn Concerto, played by Jakob Keiding, and the suite from Der Bürger als Edelmann. Strauss’s Oboe Concerto is in three seamless movements: a pastoral opening with ornate oboe lines leads into a radiant slow movement and virtuoso finale.

We know him as epic, modernist, excessive, melancholic, operatic, post-Romantic. But just before entering adulthood, Strauss entrusted to the piano some often intimate and delicate thoughts, which know what they owe to his heroes of the moment. Guillaume Bellom sketches the young man at his keyboard, as heir to Beethoven, Schumann and Mendelssohn.
