In 1981 the first Stray Cats album was gaining a following among kids in America that frequented the import section of their local record store. This quirky London based trio got the chance of a lifetime when they were asked to be one of the opening acts on the East Coast leg of The Rolling Stones' 1981 U.S. Tour. Most people assumed they were a rockabilly band from England doing beats from the 50's with an 80's attitude and the confusion would be understandable given that the band had taken up residence in London (they relocated there in 1979), this album was recorded in London, and their management was based there. The members of Stray Cats were actually American, from the Long Island town of Massapeaqua, New York.

The Stray Cats' second album, Gonna Ball, was considered something of a disappointment when it was released in 1981; back then, it had the disadvantage of competing with the expectations raised by its immediate predecessor, a miraculous debut produced under the guidance of Dave Edmunds.

Lost Friends", Middle Kids’ forthcoming debut on Domino, is the kind of album that sucker-punches you in the gut, revealing its nuances only after repeated listens. Its twelve songs veer from brittle blasts of indie rock, to elegiac piano ballads, to pop anthems destined to ignite stadium singalongs. The songs’ edges have been kept jagged, the production clean, the band keen to let stray imperfections imbue warmth and a human touch.

This massive, ten-disc, 200-track box set covers a lot of ground. From post-punk and new wave to heavy metal and the paisley underground, the '80s were anything but dull, and Pop Years: The 80s does a nice job of conjuring up images of those old K-Tel record commercials that used to come on between Dance Fever and Solid Gold.
