Full-blooded quartet playing in the grand, classic manner: extrovert and eloquent is how the performances of the Escher String Quartet were described in a review of their recording of Mendelssohns first and fourth quartets in BBC Music Magazine. After completing the three-disc cycle of Mendelssohn quartets and earning further accolades, including a nomination to the 2017 BBC Music Magazine Awards the quartet now returns with a programme which leaves plenty of opportunity for their special brand of playing.

The third instalment in their award-winning series, the Calidore Quartet return with a three-disc album of the Early Quartets. Their Beethoven performances have been described as ‘shockingly deep’ by LA Times. The first album of Late Quartets won the Chamber Music Award at the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2024, and their second album of Middle Quartets will be awarded Chamber Recording of the Month in the October issue of Gramophone Magazine. Their interpretation is informed by their diverse set of mentors which include Alban Berg, Emerson, Guarneri and yet still uniquely representing the sentiments, aesthetics and research of their generation. Their interpretations of Beethoven are already critically acclaimed with performances at the Lincoln Centre planned as part of their residency.

So wrote Beethoven in 1801, having just finished his first set of string quartets at the surprisingly advanced age of 30: the competition of Haydn and Mozart must have been intimidating for the young composer. But these six Quartets Op.18, which cost him great effort and extensive revision, already display much boldness and originality, from the dramatic echoes of 'Romeo and Juliet' in No.1 to the astonishing programmatic finale of No.6, ‘La Malinconia’. The Jerusalem Quartet was founded in 1993, and began its training in Jerusalem, under the direction of the violinist Avi Abramovitch. From 1999 to 2001 the quartet received support from the BBC (as BBC New Generation Artists), then in 2003 it was the recipient of the first Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. The Jerusalem Quartet is now a regular guest in the world’s leading concert halls, notably in the United States where it is increasingly present. It performs with such artists as Alexander Melnikov, Lawrence Power, and Sharon Kam.
