Sufism is the mystical and ancient branch of Islam that emphasizes the seeker's path toward ecstatic unity with God. This path is opulently embroidered with many means to "remembering God," or dhikr (also transliterated as zhikr), including chanting the names of God, prayer, meditation, poetry, Qur'anic recitation, praise and music.

Spanning across almost every continent and over a millennium, the sufi movement has influenced various cultures and ways of life. Besides being a strong philosophical ad spiritual guide for its follewers, the discipline has also gone on to influence art through way of dance, poetry and perhaps most notably, music. Not far behind is the fine art of Sufi whirling which leaves participants and viewers alike mesmerized. A dynamic form of meditation practiced by the Dervishes, it is said that the whirling signifies the leaving behind of the ego and the uniting of the mind, body and soul with a divine power.
