Box sets are difficult phenomena. Their cost is often prohibitive, and the weight of outtakes, alternate takes, chronological corrections, and myriad other completist elements make them sometimes less listenable than the original recordings…

This may not be the ultimate Chick Corea collection, but fans aren't likely to find a better one on video anytime soon. A near-complete portrait of the legendary pianist's non-fusion career is captured on the 10-DVD Rendezvous In New York boxed set, featuring performances from his three-week run of reunion concerts at the New York's Blue Note in 2003 to celebrate his 60th birthday. Those craving more after hearing the Grammy-nominated double-CD released that year under the same name will find the extended material equally satisfying. It also stands commendably on its own as a showcase for some of the most talented musicians from the past 25 years including Bobby McFerrin, Roy Haynes, Gary Burton, Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, Michael Brecker, Steve Gadd and John Patitucci.

In this first complete survey of the Boccherini symphonies, Johannes Goritzki's achievement is remarkable. Himself a cellist, he shows a natural feeling for Boccherini's special combination of galant and classical styles, revealing the music's strengths rather than its weaknesses, making the most of its colour and revelling in its fecundity of invention and easy tunefulness. The playing - on modern instruments - of the German Chamber Academany Orchestra of Neuss is alert, polished and warmhearted, besides showing a nice feeling for Boccherini's delicate Andantinos, which are never sentimentalized. Let face it… The Band brought new life to U.S. musical expression in the 60's after the British invasion. Across the Great Divide: continues that legacy. These're some of my favorite listening pieces, and as a longtime Band fan, I think matches the feel and diversity of "Americana roots" music that "The Band" brought to the ears of the world via North America. May these cuts carry on this traditional inspiration for musicians and music lovers everywhere.

Riot’s story is one of what might have been, and to some degree, a band being (or not) in the right place at the right time. What this 6 CD live collection does offer is unique, and often raw, insights into the growth and development of an influential hard rock and heavy metal band, as they graduated from small clubs in 1976 through to huge festivals in 1980. Mastered from tapes in the collection of the estate of founder member and guitarist Mark Reale.

The Marvin Gaye Collection released by Motown Records in 1990. The box set, divided into four categories, features thirty-four unreleased songs, including the sessions from 1979's The Ballads. A wonderful anthology of classics and rare tracks. The Balladeer is my favourite CD; so soulful and expressive of the pain this artist had experienced in his life. Wonderful to listen to when you are feeling nostalgic. There are many feel-good songs in this box set and already a collector's item. Some of the best music from the 20th century and an artist and voice that is truly missed.
