With a fun-is-first attitude and their influences on their sleeve (most notably 60's vocal surf, bubblegum and the Ramones), SSC neverthless succeded in writing enthusiastic, infectious music that today sounds as fresh as when it was released. This is their fourth full-length album that has been released after band's ressurection in 2009.

This compilation of unreleased & rare tracks from the Twin Cities’ Kay Bank Studios features 16 rip rollin’ cuts of some of the best surf and garage rock Kay Bank had to offer. Features The Trashmen, The Vaqueros, and more! Includes liner notes by John Blair! Kay Bank Recordings in Minneapolis was certainly one of these historic studios. It was named after the wife of owner Vernon Bank. Although he had been involved in the recording business since the late 1940s, Bank’s recording studio operation got underway in 1957 when he moved into a building that was large enough to also establish a pressing plant. The studio provided a 3-track Ampex recorder, a 12-input recording console, and a live echo chamber.

California may be the largest state in the Union, but it's only one state nuzzling one ocean, with only so many people living near the coastline, and a small minority of them have attempted to navigate waves on a board, much less possess the fetching physique to do so in public. Obviously, then, surf music isn't for surfers. If it were, Rhino would put out a greatest-hits EP instead of a four-disc box set. Cowabunga! is all the permanent-wave stuff most people will ever need.

Amazon Review by Stuart Jefferson
54 minutes in length approximately. The tracks, from the original analogue tapes, have been remastered. The sound is fairly crisp and open. The booklet contains some good info on the bands, producers, and the era.
This collection does contain some rare West Coast surf music, from the small Titan Records label. This was one of a myriad of small, independent record companies in the late 50's/early 60's that released surf music hoping to cash-in on the surf/instrumental craze (which only lasted a short time),then coming into vogue. Usually the vast numbers of these groups (THE SURFMEN,THE STRANGERS,THE STORMS,THE PLAYBOYS,among others), sold their records only locally,or at best, regionally. Very few of these groups made it to the national level in sales. It's interesting that (the late) Gary Usher (heard here),who was responsible (and famous) for dozens of teen records (both instrumental and vocal),made his first recordings for Titan.

The Beach Boys' third and fifth albums make a good pairing on one CD, different as they are in content and origins. Surfer Girl was the album on which the group's and Brian Wilson's sound blossomed, and it did so on several levels. The title track was the first song that Brian ever wrote, and it's lucky that he saved it for this stage in their history, for it features surprising elegant and lush harmonies. The usual assumption is that, because of Wilson's hearing loss in one ear, the group's records work best in mono, but on this, their second album in stereo, the mixing makes inventive use of the two-channel separation, even on "Surfer Girl" (which, as a single in those days, would have been conceived in mono from the get-go).

At the beginning of the 1960s, a style of rock was born, evoking the new surfing fashion in California. Initially instrumental on electric guitar, this sunny universe, symbol of freedom, encounters in swimsuits, tanned athletes and big waves, then inspired songs on this theme. Bruno Blum returns to the roots and birth of surf rock by revealing and commenting on irresistible recordings by its precursors, such as the Hawaiian Sol Ho'opi'i, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy but also by its first performers, including the Ventures, Dick Dale and the Revels. Not to mention vocal groups like the Beach Boys, who began their career singing about the world of surfing, an integral part of the American myth.
