For its third outing, Latin Quarter served up more surprises for its fans. Trimmed down to a quartet (half the band it used to be?), the band was more musically focused on this album than ever before. Choosing to keep the world rhythms to a minimum, the album's backbeat was clearly lush acoustic pop with a few touches added for flourish and flavor. Without completely altering their approach, the bandmembers were able to simplify their sound without giving up their identity. In doing so, they finally created what could be considered the "Latin Quarter" sound. Steve Skaith (vocals and guitar) served up some his best melodies to date, while lyricist Mike Jones proved to be as thought-provoking as ever, challenging the listener with each song.

Roger Eno's Swimming is a rather drastic departure from his more classically oriented and purposely ambient work. Rather, it is a series of 14 songs, eight of which are vocal, and three of which are his versions of traditional tunes. The overtone of the entire proceeding is quiet, graced with a simple elegance illustrated with acoustic and electric guitars, basses, pianos, keyboards, vibes, other delicate percussion and subdued synthesizers emulating a skeletal string section…

The Pittsburgh artist went through a breakup with Ariana Grande and was arrested for a drunken car crash – but his troubles result in a wiser, sadder, better album. There are those years when it seems the only way through is to tell yourself: “Hey, one day, this will make for some good writing material.” Mac Miller has had one of those years. This spring, the 26-year-old rapper’s two-year relationship with Ariana Grande ended; weeks later, he was arrested after drunkenly crashing his car into a telegraph pole.

Squirrel Flower is the alias 22-year-old Ella Williams adopted for herself when writing songs and poetry as a child. Coming from a professional musical family spanning generations, Williams has always been surrounded by music. By 14 she started writing more seriously and released her first EP of folk music under her own name. After immersing herself in the DIY scene of her Boston hometown before moving to Iowa to study art + gender, women’s, & sexuality studies at Grinnell College, she found a more experimental sound, linking her choral roots, classical harmony and ethereal chord structures, and released her first EP as Squirrel Flower, Early Winter Songs From Middle America.

If you just heard Oliver Tree on the radio or online, you'd pick up on his influences, bringing together '90s/2000s pop-punk, grunge, and Brit-pop influences. However, if you've seen his satirical high-concept music videos you know he pairs his often straight-forward and earnestly delivered singer/songwriter anthems with an over-the-top image replete with nerdy bowl-mullet haircut, tiny sunglasses, and what clearly looks like his head CGI'd onto another person's body. All of which means that Tree is equal parts pop singer and performance artist. It's an intriguing contrast he further pushes on his sophomore album, 2022's country-tinged Cowboy Tears. While nothing here is full-on country music, there are enough twangy acoustic guitars, as well as allusions to wagon wheels and broken hearts that make it feel, at the very least, like a knowing pastiche. If Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" was a hip-hop look at country, think of this as a SoCal emo-punk take on the genre. There's a deliberate nostalgia to Cowboy Tears, as if Tree is crafting sad songs for people who once snubbed Faith Hill and Tim McGraw in favor of blink-182 and now find themselves looking back with an odd fondness for both.
