Syreeta Wright had been doing receptionist, secretarial, and demo vocalist work for Motown when she made her recorded debut, as Rita Wright, on her employer's Gordy subsidiary. "I Can't Give Back the Love I Gave You," an aching number written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson with Brian Holland, unfortunately went nowhere - in a commercial sense - upon its January 1968 release. It did reach Dusty Springfield, whose version was out in the U.K. by the end of November. Within a couple years, Wright co-wrote the Spinners' "It's a Shame" and gained more attention when she and fellow composer Stevie Wonder wed a few weeks after that smash began its chart ascent. As an artist, Wright remained in the shadows until 1972, when she released her Stevie-produced debut album. From 1967 through 1970, however, she recorded a high stack of shelved, frequently decent, occasionally excellent Motown material compiled here by the Kent label.

Although her voice is not particularly strong, Thomas does have a knack for creating a gentle bluegrass groove. She is joined here by Seldom Scene, Bill Evans, Dry Branch Fire Squad and others, for a collection of traditional nuggets and a few nice originals.

The reissue labels were never very kind to Syreeta, resulting in the sad fact that compilations remain the best (if not the only) way to hear what made her recordings so special. The Essential Syreeta is the best of a tiny lot, with a passable selection of material from her '70s and '80s records. For some unknown reason, the compilers virtually ignored her fine 1972 debut; only two songs are included, one of them (fortunately) her sweet, grooving remake of Stevie Wonder's "I Love Every Little Thing About You" (first heard earlier that year on Stevie's Music of My Mind).

One of the five releases that comprise SoulMusic Records’ October 2012 "Motown-themed” month (featuring artists who recorded at some point for the globally famous label), ONE TO ONE was the third Motown album by the late, multi-talented singer/songwriter Syreeta. A truly remarkable piece of music, her third album ONE TO ONE was produced by Syreeta and then-new husband, musician Curtis Robertson, Jr. with whom she wrote four songs and Motown stalwart Leon Ware (fresh off the triumphant Marvin Gaye LP, I Want You) who collaborated on three songs for the project; one track, the R&B charted and popular UK single, ‘Harmour Love,’ was written and produced by Stevie Wonder in 1975.

Wonder's "classic period", which is widely considered to have ended in 1977, was noted for his funky keyboard style, personal control of production, and series of songs integrated with one another to make a concept album. In 1979, Wonder made use of the early music sampler Computer Music Melodian through his composition of the soundtrack album Stevie Wonder's Journey Through "The Secret Life of Plants". It was also his first digital recording, and one of the earliest popular albums to use the technology, which Wonder used for all subsequent recordings. Wonder's 1970s albums are regarded as very influential; the Rolling Stone Record Guide (1983) wrote they "pioneered stylistic approaches that helped to determine the shape of pop music for the next decade"

Soul Brother has given us a long overdue compilation of Gary Bartz's experimental jazz material from the 1970s, beginning with his classic Harlem Bush Music albums, Taifa and Uhuru from 1970 and 1971, with his band NTU Troop. While it's impossible to overstate the influence his brief tenure with Miles Davis had on him (Bartz is featured on the Live-Evil recordings), the saxophonist and composer was exploring other avenues of creative black music as well, from funk to soul to the blues. The 12 cuts here begin with the sublime "Celestial Blues," from that seminal NTU Troop debut set.

Contains fewer crossover hits than previous volumes, but R&B scorchers like "Funky Music Sho' Nuff Turns Me On," by Yvonne Fair, and Bonnie Pointer's "Free My From My Freedom," will liven any party. High Energy's energetic "He's a Pretender" sounds like a smash, but failed to sell, the Mary Jane Girls' erotic "Candy Man" did much better. The only Pop hits are Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way," and "The Boss," by Diana Ross, but crankers by Tata Vega, Syreeta Wright, and the Supremes rate high on the groove meter. However, Milira's jazzy "Mercy Mercy Me" doesn't belong on a collection called Funkology: Dance Divas.
