The story takes place in a alternate postwar period, in 1996, where Japan is divided. Hokkaido is ruled by the "Union" while Honshu and other southern islands are under US authority. A tall tower was built on Hokkaido, which could even be seen from Tokyo. In the summer of 1996, three middle-school students make a promise that they'll cross the border with a self-constructed plane and unravel the tower's secret, but their project was abandoned after the girl, Sayuri Sawatari, became mysteriously ill and transferred to Tokyo. Years later on the brink of another war Hiroki Fujisawa finds out that Sayuri had been in coma since then, and he asks Takuya Shirakawa to help him finding a way to wake her up.

It was always going to be a dangerous mission. Trevor Churchill’s brainchild, THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICAN POP, had been in development for some time and the prototype was about to be launched into the fray with a bundle of seemingly undifferentiated repertoire. The potential embarrassment factor was high with risk of heavy flak on the way and snipers on the ground in the landing zone. Trevor was calling for volunteers. There was a lot of nervous shuffling among the ranks. Some of the lads took to studying their toecaps, while others took an inordinate interest in the state of their cuticles, or tried to look inconspicuous by melting into the background.

Label: EMI Records Ltd. (EU) | Cat.# 00946 3 63131 2 2 | Released: 2008-05-28 (1987)

This 1987 release is absolutely one of Kiki's very best albums. She makes a welcome return back to doing rock songs, but it also has other influences as well. Definitely a touch of alternative modern rock on songs like "I'll Build A Tower Over You" (with an uncredited Daryl Hall featured), "Pay", "We Cry On", and the hard edged "Knowing You Like I Do". But that's not all as there are some superior ballads like "Stay Close To Me" and "Angel Eyes" - both dreamy, perfect pop ballads produced magnificently by Patrick Seymour. And Dave Stewart of Eurythmics produced "Another Day Comes (Another Day Goes)", an uptempo modern rock song with a gospel choir & horns! How this album missed being a hit is puzzling, but then it was never released in the US either. Finally, EMI has corrected the situation with reissuing this Kiki classic that you have got to hear.
