Unlike other labels subjected to exhaustive multi-disc retrospectives like this whopping ten-disc Revolutions in Sound: Warner Bros. Records – The First Fifty Years, Warner Brothers never embodied a scene or sound: they've always embodied what a major label should be – a dominant force that chronicles and dictates the sound of the mainstream. Coming out at the tail-end of 2008, when the influence of major labels is on a slow steady decline, Revolutions in Sound can be seen as a portrait of a time that's beginning to recede into the past: a time when there was such a thing as mass entertainment, when the pop audience all shared a common bond of hit records they either loved or rallied against. Perhaps the greatest things about this monumental box set is that it captures that colossus while also illustrating that for a while, majors did take risks. Of course, Warner was the riskiest of all the majors, never held back by an anti-rock & roll sourpuss like Mitch Miller, who struggled to keep CBS out of the tumult of the '60s (this with no less than Bob Dylan as the label's flagship rock artist). Instead, Warner embraced the underground, recording some of the strangest to shake out of the '60s, and that adventure fits a label that turned to rock & roll to help establish themselves as a real player at the turn of the '60s.

The seventies saw a generation of energetic and virtuoso rock bands reach the top before collapsing in the face of the arrival of the punk wave whose appearance strangely coincided with the much lighter fashion of disco. But at the dawn of the 80's another story begins: punk was turning into post-punk and technological evolutions as well as the advent of synthesizers would forever mark the sound of this decade. Everything was allowed: pop, soul, metal or electro, bands of all kinds shamelessly exploited their new toys and unknowingly created what was to become the sound of the 80s.

Shes Gone is a song written and originally performed by pop music duo Daryl Hall and John Oates. It was included on album, Abandoned Luncheonette. Easy is a song by Commodores for the Motown label, from their fifth album, Commodores.

The biggest challenge was narrowing the choices down to sixty four tracks from a starting point of several hundred. But the guys at the label gave me some direction as to the shape of the album - a mix of hits and more unusual stuff. I've drawn not only on my own personal production history but also on my extensive knowledge of disco, funk and soul music - I guess - having had years of first-hand dance floor experience from landmark era clubs such as Studio 54".

Memorably reinterpreted after ten years after the fact as Vanilla Ices breakout single Ice Ice Baby, Under Pressure found two contemporaries David Bowie and Queen collaborating for the first and only time on a great one-off single. Led by the vocalist Mick Hucknall, the English blue-eyed soul band Simply Red became international stars with their debut album, Picture Book. Wielding a rich, deep voice, Rick Astley became an overnight sensation in the late 80s with his well-crafted dance-pop.

Nine CD set. Robert Palmer was one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the late 20th Century. An artist and writer who sampled world-wide success, he never stopped being a music fan first and foremost, often racing to record something he'd just heard a snatch of on the radio or had caught in a club. His astute mixture of originals and well-selected covers gave him a song palette at times so eclectic that he became impossible to pigeonhole. In many respects, Palmer was the invisible man of pop. His close friends Talking Heads once recorded a track called Seen And Not Seen, the title of which sums up Palmer perfectly.

This compilation was curated by the Spanish edition of Rolling Stone magazine and features 100 iconic songs that shaped the history of popular music—mainly from the 1950s to the 1990s. The tracks are spread across five CDs and focus on English-language rock, blues, folk, and pop classics.
