osé Serebrier's distinctive conceptions and nimble conducting imbue the familiar Marche slave, Capriccio italien, and 1812 Overture with a freshness that belies their long-held "warhorse" status. By employing lighter sonorities and crystal-clear balances (all rendered with spectacular fidelity and dynamism by BIS's remarkably vivid recording) that expose Tchaikovsky's gorgeous woodwind writing and inner harmonic detail, Serebrier brings a vibrant youthful quality even to the overplayed 1812. Listen to how the bracing opening, with its cleanly phrased, rhythmically taut string playing fosters ever-increasing tension. Later, in the grand coda, the dramatic brass-and-strings interplay genuinely excites while cannons roar away in the distance (the opposite approach to Telarc's cannon-down-your-throat technique).

Romeo and Juliet begins with 4 minutes of an intriguing, mysterious, adagio theme, followed at 5 minutes by an energetic, allegro theme. At 8 minutes we hear a beautiful, adagio melody over rippling French horns. After that, the existing themes are developed to express passion. Francesca da Ramini has an opening theme that evokes a netherworld. Thereafter Tchaikovsky extensively develops a powerful theme. Then at 10 minutes a clarinet begins a beautiful melody to be continued by violins then flute. Near the end the piece builds to a climax.

Slatkin's recording of Tchaikovsky's "Little Russian" Symphony (No 2 in C minor) is very good. Slatkin uses an expansive tempo in the Allegro of I, but the music never drags. In short Slatkin and the virtuoso musicians of the Saint Louis Symphony serve Tchaikovsky's early symphony very well. The impression they give is one of massiveness and confidence, and it works!

Giya Kancheli’s tenth album on ECM New Series offers two recent large-scale choral works with unconventional instrumental forces. While the composer has frequently stated that his love for music began with Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington rather than with Bach and Schubert let alone with traditional Georgian polyphony, his highly compelling new compositions mirror impressions of both Western and Georgian sacred music without actually alluding to religion itself. Written in 2003 and 2005 respectively, both “Little Imber“ and “Amao Omi” are melancholic musings about the absurdity of war in conjunction with the power of beauty.

Reprise Record's NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 (Original Broadway Cast Recording) was the album I was looking forward to the most from this Broadway season, and it truly doesn't disappoint. It is a stunning capture of my favorite new musical of the season, and it will be a showpiece in any musical theatre aficionado's collection of cast albums for years to come.

The overture-suite enjoyed a great popularity, especially in Germany during the first half of the 18th century in particular Bach’s so-called 'Orchestral Suites'. While the opening overture was associated with clear expectations of form, the composer was relatively free in the selection and sequence of the following movements. Georg Philipp Telemann put this into practice creatively in a diverse selection of overture-suites, the titles of which allude humorously to characters and human behaviors, as well as contemporary events and discussions: 'La Bizarre', 'La Changeante' or 'Des nations anciens et modernes'. The selection on this recording offers a wonderful insight into the veritable cosmos of Telemann’s overture-suites.

The latest recording by Arion Baroque Orchestra bears witness to the fact that Georg Philipp Telemann’s extensive catalog of works is not yet fully known to listeners. This CD marks the world premiere recording, under the direction of Alexander Weimann, of Telemann’s Overture in G major, TWV 55: G5. The accompanying suite of evocatively titled dances is utterly French in character, with a pastoral trio of wind instruments — two oboes and a bassoon. The two concertos on this recording are directed by Mathieu Lussier. They adopt the four-movement form (slow-fast-slow-fast), a vestige of the sonata da chiesa, one of Telemann’s favourite forms.
