If any vocalist could possibly claim to be the current pretender to Adele’s throne, then Sam Smith is surely the prize candidate. Their debut album, In The Lonely Hour, was released on May 26, 2014, and has transformed the softly spoken British singer-songwriter into a global megastar.

The ever autumnal trio (and sometimes quartet) paint a lovely picture of country sides, bonfires, and melancholy with their tender guitar pop. Collection includes: Suburban Light (2000); The Violet Hour (2003); Strange Geometry (2005); God Save The Clientele (2007).

Few (if any?) opera singers have also been Academy Award nominees, let alone for Best Actor. But then again, there is only one Lawrence Tibbett (1896–1960). Described as dashing, Tibbett had a career as a movie actor, radio show personality and host, with sponsors such as Packard, Firestone, and Chesterfield. He was also one of the first “crossover” artists singing Gershwin, Kern, and Porter, and was a staple at the Met. A cogent and articulate advocate for artistic causes (rare in his day), he founded the American Guild of Musical Artists with Jascha Heifetz. But first and foremost, Lawrence Tibbett was an opera singer and one of the greatest baritones of all time.

It's enough to make a cartoon lover's eyes bug out. About half of the 67 shorts in the laserdisc set The Compleat Tex Avery and most of the 70 cartoons in The Golden Age of Looney Tunes, Volume 3 are — aOOOga! — new to video and (for now, at least) exclusive to disc. Although these compilations aren't in CAV format, which means you can't freeze-frame or slo-mo the exploding animals unless you buy a player with pricy digital effects, the picture quality still makes tape look smeary by comparison.
Arranged chronologically, the nine-hour Compleat Tex Avery gives the silliest of material a suitably absurdist archival cachet. It actually catalogs only the director's years at MGM (Avery also worked at Warner Bros. and for Walter Lantz), but for his very best cartoons, this is one-stop shopping.
