After the failure of Gottle O'Geer, a poor, unfocussed album, some core members of Fairport arranged a new record deal and decided to have some fun, having accepted their place in the musical world. Let by fiddler Dave Swarbrick and guitarist Simon Nicol, they made a couple of fun, unpretentious and surprisingly rocking electric folk albums in this and Tippler's Tales. The album features a couple of sets of vigorous jigs and reels, as always, but also some great choices of vocal material, particularly the title track, a 12.5 minute tale of the Napoleonic wars.

Sometimes a single track can satisfy an album's worth of listening. You get that feeling with "People be Talking," the first song on Jon Lundbom's ninth release with his band Big Five Chord. His quintet packs everything into this kitchen sink composition. The piece is jazz-and-not-jazz, like Miles Davis affected in his transitional years between his second great quintet to jazz/rock fusion. But then again, it's not that at all. The propulsive 6/4 groove leaks an Afro-Cuban feel, and saxophonist Bryan Murray plays the role of a kung fu drunken master, bobbing and weaving with intoxicated honks and squeals that appear unbalanced, yet strike with a precise authority. Lundbom's guitar enters to clear the debris left by Murray, with rapid spitfire notes that leave echoed traces as he slows the speeding track to a halt. The song doesn't so much end as it just consumes itself.

In some ways, Murder Ballads is the record Nick Cave was waiting to make his entire career. Death and violence have always haunted his music, even when he wasn't explicitly singing about the subject. On Murder Ballads, he sings about nothing but death in the most gruesome, shocking fashion…

A drab sleeve does little justice to an imaginative (not to mention evocative) album title, but Church of Hawkwind's problems were only just beginning. Stumbling uncertainly into a new day, following their brief encounter with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Hawkwind were very much a ship in search of direction, but it would take the return of founder Nik Turner the following year to wrestle the group back on course. Church of Hawkwind finds them simply drifting, without even the isolated highlights of the previous year's Sonic Attack to look forward to.

A coming together of two artists with enormous followings – Valentina Lisitsa, with her dazzling artistry and hundreds of thousands of followers on YouTube, and Michael Nyman, with his hugely popular film soundtracks. This release, in the year of Nyman’s 70th birthday, features tracks from his multi-award-winning score for the 1993 smash hit film The Piano. Acclaimed for his music’s innovation, punchy simplicity and universal appeal, Nyman, during his career as a music critic, coined the term ‘minimalism’ for an emergent musical genre – one to which he would make extensive contributions in many of his early scores and inspire a vast global audience. The disc is packed full with 77mins of material, full of irresistible energy. The album includes all ten solo piano transcriptions from The Piano, together on one album for the first time.
