It was the logical extension of two of the most important and enduring pop music tributaries of the 1960s – the girl group sound and the garage band explosion, respectively – but the distaff garage rock scene has earned precious little documentation on record or in history books over the years. Romulan's long-running Girls in the Garage series has done much to rectify that oversight, however, compiling an astounding amount of prime crunch – the first CD volume in the series is also its strongest, adding 11 tracks to the 16 that made up the original vinyl. Like all garage collections, there are equal amounts killer and filler, and the joy of discovery is alone worth the price of admission – Denise & Co.'s "Boy, What Will You Do Then," the Belles' "Come Back," and Lydia Marcelle's "The Girl He Needs" are top-shelf by any standard, however, and the Continental Co-Ets' blistering instrumental "Melody of Junk" dismisses once and for all any lingering misconceptions that the girls couldn't rock as hard as the boys.

Martin Cilia is an Australian musician. Cilia is best known for his songwriting skills, and his membership in The Atlantics, where he performs on the guitar. "For this latest release I wanted to make an album that reflects the history of electric instrumental guitar – one that resonates from the early 60s instro/surf sound, but with a modern twist. It was all recorded the old way – real guitars, amps, microphones and with minimum digital interference. While putting the album together I came across an old multi track tape of a song that Atlantics drummer extraordinaire, Peter Hood, and myself were working on. I had a listen and decided to finish it off. The drum track was so good and had so much of Peter’s energy. That song is Terminator. You’ll know it when you get to it! Being a fan and growing up with this style of guitar music it was a pleasure to write and record these new songs. Basically I wanted to make an album of great songs with great sounds. I hope I achieved that."

Throughout the 1960s there were regional scenes throughout the USA that occasionally lobbed indie recordings onto the charts. But more importantly, the artists in these locales combined national influences with unique local twists to create original sounds. One of the more identifiable such pockets of artistry was barrio of mid-60s East Los Angeles. The national hits included Cannibal & The Headhunters reworking of Chris Kenner's "Land of 1000 Dances" (later reworked to even greater chart success by Wilson Pickett) and the garage-rock classic "Farmer John" by the Premiers, but the non-charting local radio spins and club favorites were just as good.

Along the Atlantic coast, a soon-to-be-inaugurated futuristic tower looms over a suburb of Dakar. Ada, 17, is in love with Souleiman, a young construction worker. But she has been promised to another man. One night, Souleiman and his co-workers leave the country by sea, in hope of a better future. Several days later, a fire ruins Ada’s wedding and a mysterious fever starts to spread. Little does Ada know that Souleiman has returned. In her feature debut, Mati Diop continues to harness fantasy and social relevancy in this haunting tale of love. "This shape-shifting Senegalese drama is pure cinematic poetry. Slipping in and out of modes with a magician’s confidence, Atlantics is mysterious and mythic, with a wizardly use of sound and some unforgettable images.” (The Telegraph, Tim Robey)

A long time coming but worth the wait. Unfortunately there are hardly any instrumental hits in this day and age, but there was a time when some of the biggest chart hits were brilliant instrumentals and most of them are on this 3CD collection. You will know the songs even if you don’t know the artist initially, as a lot of the songs have been used in movies and TV commercials over the years apart from the continuous radio airplay on Easy Listening stations across Australia. Some of the names worth mentioning are: The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Hugh Masekela, Hugo Montenegro & His Orchestra, Paul Mauriat, Percy Faith & His Orchestra, The Ventures, Sandy Nelson, The Shadows, Van McCoy, George Benson, Marvin Hamlisch and the list goes on.
