The Best of Petula Clark

Four-CD, 80-song box set of Clark's '60s material contains all of her big U.S. and U.K. hits, numerous singles that were only hits in other countries (usually France), and a bunch of interesting covers, B-sides, and LP tracks, some quite rare. If you're enough of a fan to want more than what you'll find on the usual thorough hits anthology, but not enough of a fan to want everything she ever did, this is perfect. It's got all of the classics, serviceable (although not terribly extensive) liner notes, and a host of interesting items that aren't well-known.

Beat music, British beat, or Merseybeat (after bands from Liverpool and nearby areas beside the River Mersey) is a pop and rock music genre that developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. Beat music is a fusion of rock and roll (mainly Chuck Berry guitar style and the midtempo beat of artists like Buddy Holly), doo-wop, skiffle and R&B. The genre provided many of the bands responsible for the British Invasion of the American pop charts starting in 1964, and provided the model for many important developments in pop and rock music, including the format of the rock group around lead, rhythm and bass guitars with drums. This set was compiled from the British labels Pye, Piccadilly, Transatlantic and Immediate, so is necessarily restricted in what it includes, yet such is the abundance of Beatles covers that there is plenty to enjoy in this eclectic compilation. The covers are presented in Beatles date order, although it does not follow that the actual covers were recorded in that order. The tracks from Let it be precede those from Abbey road. There are also a few songs that the Beatles wrote but did not record themselves, one of these being Step inside love, a UK top ten hit for Cilla Black, but here covered by Nina Baden-Semper, an actress best known for her role in the seventies TV series Love thy neighbour.

This two-fer from Manifesto features a pair of out of print LPs by Turtles vocalists Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (aka Flo & Eddie): The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie and Flo & Eddie, originally issued on Reprise in 1972 and 1973, respectively. Highlights among the 23 tracks include "Goodbye Surprise," "Another Pop Star's Life," "Marmendy Mill," and a cover of the Small Faces classic "Afterglow." Here's a really nice 2fer I just picked up, Flo & Eddie's first two releases in one package. I used to love the Turtles when I was a growing boy, then they showed up on Frank Zappa's Fillmore East 1971 opus and hilarity ensued. After leaving the Mothers, Flo & Eddie released their own stuff, these are the first two of their humorous output. A more extensive bio is listed below. Have fun.
