Show tunes provide a multitude of reference material for the traditional vintage jazz or pop vocalist. Then there are movie themes, more familiar to the general public, especially when they were seen later on a modern invention called television. This collection of 26 tracks features a modicum of jazz, but mainly pop tunes from the Golden Era of the '30s, '40s, and '50s. Big bands are prevalent as the backup groups, sometimes including strings, with little instrumental improvisation and stock charts. Among the most famous of these sentimental journey songs are "Moon River" from Billy May, "Call Me Irresponsible" by Bobby Darin, Dean Martin's slightly sloshed "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa" and his actually hip "The Continental" (two of three Cole selections heard here). There are also two from Johnny Mandel with the Pied Pipers, "Swinging on a Star" by Freddie Slack, a young Nancy Wilson with "Secret Love," and soupier group vocal pieces from the King Sisters, Bob Hope with the Clark Sisters, the Lettermen, the Four Freshmen, and Ray Anthony with the Belvederes on the apropos "Thanks for the Memory." Overall, this is nothing more than a trip down that lane of reminiscence for those familiar with the old dirt road path to grandma's, now a superhighway.

Everyone knows them from the Hollywood movies, the beautiful Christmas songs of the 50s and 60s.Starting with Bing Crosb's unforgettable "White Christmas", Doris Day's "Here Comes Santa Claus" and Dean Martin's evergreen "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" up to the Christmas rock songs "Jingle Bells Rock" by Bobby Helms and Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree", everything that makes up the American Christmas sound is represented on this double CD.In addition to the well-known Christmas massongs, there are also several rarities such as "Nuttin' For Christmas" by the Fontane Sisters and "I Believe In Santa Claus" by the Mills Brothers. Johnny Mathis' version of "Sleigh Ride" is probably one of the most successful recordings of this time.Celebrate an American Christmas like in the "good old days" with this CD.

The soundtrack to the Queen biopic will please both casuals and obsessives. For the former, lots of hits: “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Under Pressure,” and, of course, the grandiose title track among them. And for the latter, Queen struts out rare live tracks and fresh updates to classics. “We Will Rock You” merges a studio and live performance, “Don’t Stop Me Now” features newly recorded guitar parts from Brian May. The surviving members of Queen also recorded their very own arrangement of the famous 20th Century Fox theme. But the biggest jewel in the crown is the addition of five songs from the band’s dramatic 1985 Live Aid performance—a faithful re-creation of which serves as the movie's climax—now available for the first time. Ayyy-oh!

Eric Carmen - The Best Of Eric Carmen (1988)

Review By G. Sawaged
After his stint as leader of The Raspberries, Eric Carmen had a succesful solo career. "All by myself" is from Carmen's solo debut album from 1975. One of his most successful songs, it has since been covered by numerous artists. All of the songs on this album were written by Carmen except "Hungry Eyes" from the movie 'Dirty Dancing'. Eric Carmen has an unerring sense of melody and songcraft that has resulted in some of the best pop rock ever. Just try not to dance to "That's Rock 'n Roll"...impossible. "She Did It" is the greatest Beach Boy song that Brian Wilson never wrote, and "It hurts Too Much" has a Phil Spector-like power to it. This album is a must for music lovers. If you're a fan of Billy Joel and/or Barry Manilow, you will love this album.

The first single-disc Pink Floyd compilation to surface in 30 years – the last being A Collection of Great Dance Songs, released as a stopgap between The Wall and The Final Cut – A Foot in the Door: The Best of Pink Floyd has its share of idiosyncrasies, quirks evident right from the choice of the moody “Hey You” as the set’s opener.

At the Movies: Soundtrack Hits (2007) is a 19-track compilation of Van Morrison songs featured in a film at one time or another. Rather than play like an odds-and-ends compilation of soundtrack rarities as one might expect, Soundtrack Hits plays like a best-of collection, including many of Morrison's greatest solo hits along with a couple Them songs ("Gloria," "Baby Please Don't Go"). There are several live versions in place of the studio cuts. The live versions of "Moondance" and "Brown Eyed Girl" are previously unreleased.
