One of the most famous Dylanisms arose from a conversation with director Sam Peckinpah on the set of the 1973 movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. “Just be yourself,” Peckinpah suggested to a 32-year-old Bob Dylan who, by this point, had already been everything from folk messiah to rock Judas, who had received glowing reviews and miserable ones, who once stood as a pillar of New York authenticity and was now struggling to play the role of a mysterious stranger in a Western movie filmed in Durango, Mexico. Fittingly, Dylan snapped back to Peckinpah: “Which one?”

Blonde on Blonde's second album, Rebirth, was a more focused body of music than their debut; it also constituted the recording debut of the group's second lineup: David Thomas (vocals, guitar, bass), Gareth Johnson (sitar, lead guitar, lute, electronic effects), Richard Hopkins (bass, keyboards), and Les Hicks (drums, percussion). Whether they're doing the spacy, airy, psychedelic pop of "Castles in the Sky" or the folky "Time Is Passing," the group attack their instruments as though they're performing live, and the effect is riveting throughout, even when the melodic content flags slightly…

BLOODLETTING was the album where Concrete Blonde launched into the mainstream, without losing their conscience and true center. Underrated vocalist/bassist Johnette Napolitano's descending chromatic bass line that opens "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)" is a sinister backdrop to lyrics that pay tribute to the urban legends of New Orleans. The blistering "The Sky Is A Poisonous Garden" keeps the Blonde's punky roots intact while "Caroline" speaks to heart-wrenching emotions…

The Essential Review by Johnny Loftus
Concrete Blonde's entry in Capitol's Essential series is similar to its Classic Masters retrospective from 2002. In fact, it's exactly the same track listing until Essential opts for "Happy Birthday" and "Sun," two tracks from 1989's Free. But neither collection adequately replaces 1996's comprehensive, out of print Recollection: The Best of Concrete Blonde, and Essential only goes as far as the 1992 LP Walking in London, excluding the following year's Mexican Moon. It's also curious that nothing unreleased could be scrounged from the vaults for this set. Still, diehards can cover with 2003's Live in Brazil (Ark 21), meaning Essential is probably OK for the casual Concrete fan. It's in chronological order for one thing, beginning with the fabulously hungry "Still in Hollywood" and rolling right through to "Caroline," "Joey," and "Tomorrow, Wendy" from the 1990 breakthrough, Bloodletting. The band's atmospheric cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing" dates from the same year, as does a live version of "Roses Grow." (Both were originally released on the Caroline single.) It might have switched out "Sun" for "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)." And it really could have used the title track to Mexican Moon. But otherwise, Essential is a pretty satisfactory overview of Concrete Blonde's IRS output.
