American art-rock was often stilted and lacking in humor until new wave arrived. This ranks as one of the best debut albums from a rock band. The Cars are filed under rock, but they are closer to power pop than any other genre. Ric Ocasek sounded like a cross between the Raspberries and Television, punk sound with a pop attitude. Liberated by the influence of the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music and punk-era fellow travelers like Blondie and Suicide, the Cars methodically linked hookiness (enough to produce three hit singles and several other FM favorites from this debut album) and at least one raised eyebrow. The result still plays as a rock & roll classic. And if charm wasn't their aim, the fact is, it's undeniable. In 2003, the album was ranked number 282 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Heartbeat City is the fifth studio album by American rock band the Cars. It was released on March 13, 1984, by Elektra Records. The band produced the album along with Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Picking up a positive commercial response, the Cars had many tracks getting airplay, and singles "Drive" and "You Might Think" in particular both reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album also received favorable reviews from several critics; for example, Robert Christgau stated that "the glossy approach the Cars invented has made this the best year for pure pop in damn near twenty, and it's only fair that they should return so confidently to form."

After releasing two albums, one a perfect pop/rock-meets-new wave classic, the other a very good follow-up, the Cars were game to try things a little differently on their third album Panorama. With longtime collaborator Roy Thomas Baker behind the boards, the band decamped to the Power Station in New York City and began working on a set of songs that were a little less poppy, both structurally and sonically…

If rock's most successful and memorable acts have usually succeeded by wrapping their own distillation of music history and personal tastes in whatever fashionable trappings are currently gripping the culture, it's hardly surprising that the Cars remain one of the most enduring symbols of the punk/new wave era. This 20-track anthology distills that argument perfectly. Ric Ocasek's songs embody a solid '60s sense of pop craftsmanship informed by a trend-conscious stylistic sheen and a cynical, slippery emotional detachment that's often betrayed by his own distinctly weary brand of romanticism, from the anxious pop of "Just What I Needed" and "You're All I've Got Tonight" to the melancholy-on-ice musings of "Drive" and "Tonight She Comes." Sixteen of the 20 cuts here were chart singles, and radio staples like "Bye Bye Love" and "Dangerous Type" might as well have been. ~ Jerry McCulley

A classic album by a group that helped rock music find its new direction. The Cars, Heartbeat City, was released in 1984 and immediately shot up the charts to Number 3. The album produced several songs instantly recognizable as classics that will forever be among the greatest pop songs ever recorded. Heavy beats. Cool lyrics. Lots of keyboards. This album represents 80's music at its peak, and was a forerunner of New Wave becoming pop and pop becoming New Wave.

Formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976 by high school friends Ric Ocasek (1944-2019) and Benjamin Orr (1947-2000), the band The Cars was among the big names in the power pop revival from their self-titled debut album, released two years later. From 1978 to 1987, under the aegis of its composer and producer Ocasek, the band recorded six albums and accumulated hits, such as "Just what I Needed" (1978), "Shake It Up" (1981) and "Drive" (1984). Their new-wave-stamped pop rock music, with simple and heady melodies, and an aesthetic shaped by artists like Alberto Vargas or Andy Warhol, allowed them to remain in the American Top 10 throughout the 1980s, then giving legitimacy to the two singers and leaders of the group, Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr, to pursue a career under their name. In 2011, a reformation resulted in the album Move Like this before the death of Ric Ocasek in 2019.
