The City of Ember was built over 200 year ago, deep below the earth, where the destruction of a mass-scale disaster couldn't reach it. But the city wasn't meant to be lived in forever. The generator is breaking down and the supplies are running out, but two centuries in isolation have robbed the Emberites of their knowledge and nobody understands that there's something beyond the city besides darkness. Nobody, that is, besides Lina and Doon, two teenagers who still have the hope.

The story focuses on Lola aka "Lol" who is dealing with school, love, friendship and family issues. Her mother, played by Sophie Marceau, is having an affair with her ex-husband and is torn between her responsibilities as a mother and her irresponsible behavior as an adult. As for Lol, she breaks up with her boyfriend who told her he had sex with another girl over the summer and starts to fall for his best friend. In a world where I-pods, cell phones & MSN have taken so much importance, communication is often difficult between teens and their overwhelmed parents.
LOL ca veut dire Laughing Out Loud - mort de rire - en langage MSN. C'est aussi comme ça que les amis de Lola, 15 ans, l'appellent. Pourtant, le jour de sa rentrée en seconde, Lola n'a pas le coeur à rire. Arthur, son copain, la provoque en lui disant qu'il l'a trompée pendant l'été. Et sa bande de potes a le don pour tout compliquer. Tout comme sa mère, Anne, avec qui le dialogue est devenu impossible, et pas seulement parce qu'elle ignore ce que LOL signifie. Que ses parents aient divorcé est une chose.
