Before The Dead brings together a rare collection of the earliest known performances by Jerry Garcia. From an informal and intimate 1691 performance of simple folk songs at a birthday party with future songwriting partner Robert Hunter to more polished coffeehouse gigs with old-timey and bluegrass bands through 1964, this collection showcases Garcia’s deep study of the folk music tradition and its influence on his musical journey leading to the formation of the Grateful Dead.

You’d be forgiven if the vision of Canada’s rolling plains, shoulder-high wheat, and farm country didn’t immediately send you to thoughts of southern rock. Canada’s prairies aren’t exactly Alabama or the bayou, but this is exactly where The Sheepdogs hail from, and southern rock is exactly what they do. It’s their bread and butter. Saskatoon’s favourite sons have made a living on albums dripping with Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. However, their latest album, Changing Colours, goes further.

For 3hattrio, the Southwest desert has an almost spiritual significance. Rooted in the natural world of their sacred homeland near Zion National Park in Utah, they say that their genre is “American desert music,” a simple idea for a complex sound. The music 3hattrio are making on their new album, Lord of the Desert, sounds more like extended landscapes of sound, bare mesas that ring with electronic echoes of acoustic instruments, twisting and turning as the wind shifts. On Lord of the Desert, to be released February 23, 2018, 3hattrio mix the routine with the unusual, fusing American folk music with outsider elements like autotune, psychedelia, and minimalism. It’s a wildly unusual sound, but the product of three very different musicians coming together to form something new.

This watershed release represents the life’s work of William Ferris, an audio recordist, filmmaker, folklorist, and teacher with an unwavering commitment to establish and to expand the study of the American South.
William Ferris was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1942. Growing up on a working farm, Ferris began at a young age documenting the artwork, music, and lives of the people on the farm and in his local community. The archive of recordings that he created and the documentary films that he had a hand in producing have served as powerful tools in institutions of higher learning for decades. It is with great excitement that we present these films and recordings. Our hope is that the enjoyment and educational value that has been received by Ferris’s students over the years will be transmitted to listeners around the world and further the understanding of Southern culture.

One of the most notorious Australian pub rock bands, Cosmic Psychos play beer-fueled, garage-accented, heavy-hitting punk rock with no frills and no pretensions. Officially beginning their journey together in 1985, the Psychos gained a reputation for not caring about money so much as the free beer, laughs, and occasional overseas traveling involved with being in a rock band. Despite their lack of careerism, over the course of a career that's spanned four decades, the group released over a dozen albums, sang with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, befriended Mudhoney, and supplied beer to the then-underage Silverchair at Australia's Big Day Out festival.
