The Grandmother Plot

Based on Walter Reisch's play The Song is Ended, The Song You Gave Me is a British attempt to emulate the glossy "continental" style. Hollywood's Bebe Daniels (who later took up permanent residence in London) stars as Mitzi Hansen, the personal secretary to world-renowned singer Karl Linden (Victor Varconi). He falls in love with her, but she keeps him at arm's length. As time goes by, of course, Mitzi wins Karl on her own terms. Bebe Daniels handles her musical numbers with her usual charm and grace, while Frederick Lloyd offers silly-ass comedy relief as "Baron Bobo." Eva Moore, cast as Daniels' grandmother, was at the time of The Song You Gave Me the mother-in-law of Laurence Olivier.

Miles Vorkosigan makes his debut in this frenetic coming-of-age tale. At age 17, Miles is allowed to take the entrance exams to the elite military academy; he passes the written but manages, through miscalculation in a moment of anger, to break both his legs on the obstacle course, washing out before he begins. His aged grandfather dies in his sleep shortly after, for which Miles blames himself. Miles is sent to visit his grandmother Naismith on distant Beta Colony, accompanied by his bodyguard, Sergeant Bothari and Bothari's daughter, Elena.

This made-for-TV movie is about Wall Street hotshot Will Martin (Neil Patrick Harris), who goes back to his hometown after his grandfather dies, despite feeling that he doesn't belong there any more. As everyone gets ready for the Christmas season, Martin is busy working in the family real estate business. While going through his grandfather's things, he and his grandmother (Debbie Reynolds) discover a diary that mentions an unknown woman named Lilian. Will decides to track her down.
