AVID Jazz here presents three classic Barney Kessel albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'Some Like It Hot', 'The Poll Winners', 'Carmen' and eight of nine tracks from 'The Poll Winners Ride Again' Barney Kessel was voted the most popular jazz guitarist for three straight years between 1956- 1958 by three major US polls for Down Beat, Playboy and Metronome. All but one of our selections were recorded during this period and the fourth when he was still riding high in 1959! 'Some Like It Hot'- a modern jazz album version of the songs from the classic movie 'Some Like It Hot' starring, of course, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. As Barney observed 'This was a lot of fun for all of us the arrangements were head arrangementsit has a relaxed loose feeling'.

New Orleans…. home of jazz, birthplace of the funk and, some would say, of rock'n'roll. No great controversy there, but The Big Easy's role in the history of soul music has been less well documented. Part of the 'History of Soul' series, this compilation of tracks illustrates the depth and breadth of music produced in the city between 1958 and 1962. Music that went way beyond R&B, taking into soul the joyous rhythms of funky second line parade bands, the gospel-based piano triplets of barrelhouse wizards and the tight horn sections of Allen Toussaint and Dave Bartholomew, whose arrangements from would later inform the classic Stax sound.

Link Wray’s Rumble and Bill Doggett’s Hold It are the only two big hits included on this collection, which puts a deserved spotlight on both long-forgotten records by established artists and on fabulous obscurities by long-forgotten artists. But rest assured, this is a cracking compilation from start to finish, with Southern swamp rock, spicy New Orleans rhythms and Northern city blues. Guitar and sax-led rockers, slinky organ stompers, Latin groovers – all in all, 60 mighty instrumental stompers from 1958, R&B-style.

This massive box consists of the first act of the Killer's career, the complete output from his 1956-1962 years at Sun Records, wherein a bible school dropout with a high country tenor, a ten-fingered demolition derby piano attack out of boogie-woogie, and a miscegenation-spurred penchant for pouring blues idioms into his hillbilly music puts him on the Rushmore of the Founding Fathers of Rock and Roll, along with Elvis and Chuck Berry.

Jonesy are one of the great British Progressive Rock bands of the early 1970s who, despite recording some of the most impressive and intelligent music of the era, sadly failed to make a commercial impact. The band was formed in 1971 by guitarist John Evan-Jones, who emigrated to Australia with his brother Trevor in the 1950s. By the mid-1960s, the Jones brothers had formed the band Chaos And Co and had enjoyed success. Returning to the UK in 1969, John forged a career as a session guitarist but by 1971 had formed Jonesy with Jame Kaleth (mellotron, keyboards, vocals), David Paull (bass, vocals) and Jim Payne (drums, percussion).

The multi-talented performer parlayed his stunning guitar skills into a vaunted reputation as one of the hottest blues axemen on the West Coast during the 1950s. He was listed as Young John Watson when he signed with Federal in 1953. His first sides for the King subsidiary found him still tinkling the ivories, but by 1954, when he dreamed up the absolutely astonishing instrumental "Space Guitar," the youth had switched over to guitar. "Space Guitar" ranks with the greatest achievements of its era – Watson's blistering rapid-fire attack, done without the aid of a pick, presages futuristic effects that rock guitarists still hadn't mastered another 15 years down the line.

Hillbillies / Rock & Roll / Country / Country Boogie / Rockabilly

At times, the line between country and rock & roll was very thin indeed, but Bear Family's two-volume, 2014 set The Hillbillies: They Tried to Rock presents a familiar story from a different angle: it showcases country singers trying to combat the rising tide of rock & roll. Plenty of the early rock & rollers came up through some manner of country circuit – the Sun stable in particular was riddled with these types – but once Elvis Presley started a streak of monster hits in 1956, major country stars and upstart hillbillies alike tried to ride that wave.
